I have a 20GB color IPOD, but it won't work with my computer that is XP SP1. I would like to know exactly what SP 2 provides, and if there is a way around the total lack of function without it. I won't be able to update to SP2 for some time yet.

SP 2 has some security updates for windows... at least thats what microsoft says. It orginizes some things. When i got it the only difference i noticed was the "security center" in control panel. This tool shows you all your security tools (anti-virus software, firewall, anti-spyware) and options.
Cynthia,
I have several iPods (including a colour one) operating successfully on Windows and I don't have SP2.
I'm not entirely sure why Apple says it's a "Windows system requirement".

Thank you for the notes-I was not expecting the extent of the issue I have without SP2. THe IPOD is not showing up in the source for ITUNES, ITUNES does not start when I plug it in. If I run install again it says it needs to be formatted, but the format never works. Any ideas? I called Apple but got the "SP2" requirement and I'm sure they will not want to discuss farther until I get SP2.
The format never works? What exactly happens when you try to format the iPod?
It will not be recognised until you format for Windows.

I install the software, and when it asks to plug in the IPOD, I do. It says "waiting for IPOD" for quite a while, Then it says it needs to be formatted, so I hit the format button. It sits at "waiting for IPOD" for hours and eventually stops. I can't remember the error message when it stops, but it says the format didn't work.
I am using a UBS connector, Apple checked to be sure it was the right speed, and it's fine. Looks to me like it is not seeing the IPOD.

Try again, and when you see that message, click on the little x in the top corner. Sometimes it gets stuck and needs a little nudge to move onto the next part of the process.
If that doesn't work, try resetting with the iPod connected.
To check if you have high speed usb ports yourself, go to start/control panel/admin tools/comp management/device manager.
Look in USB for enhanced host controller.
If it doesnt say this, then you dont have USB 2.0
Try other usb ports, and don't use a hub (not yet anyway).

Tried it. Still get nothing.
There is definitely an enhanced USB, so that is not the issue.

Probably because all new computers now are preinstalled with Windows XP SP2? Only those with older computers, like us, may still not upgrade to SP2 yet (I am using SP2, by the way.).
Hey, it worked! Finally-I have no idea why or what I did differently. We'll see how long this lasts! I may be back.
What does SP 2 provide
