Repair Permissions

Yes - the Leopard permissions now include ACLs, a whole other level of privilege settings, so it does take much longer to repair permissions. This is normal.

I just ran repair permissions on my MacBook Air SSD - it took 3 minutes.

If that was the first time you ran Repair Permissions "on my new Leopard machine" it might have taken longer.

Run Disk Verify ( just to be sure ) then run Repair Permissions again.

If Repair Permissions consistently takes 10 minutes, you may want to boot from an external disk and run full diagnostics on the internal drive.

PS How much free space do you have on your internal drive? A drive that is too full can slow down everything ..

I'm on an original iMac. Installed 10.5 to get the new iWork. I have to regularly run Permission Repair in order for Safari to run anything like it's supposed to. Pre-10.5, Permission Repair took maybe a minute. Post-10.5, Verifying alone can take 27 minutes, and Repair can take upwards of an hour.

It's intolerable. And really, Safari on this machine just won't run right unless I regularly Repair Permission. Yes, I've reinstalled. Yes, I've been through tech support. But there's something going on that is clogging Disk Utilities until it chokes.

Permission repair takes 20 minutes on my Powerbook. But it doesn't seem to repair anything.

After I installed the last update for OS X, I had a few problems. First my email programs stopped sending in two accounts.(still not solved after talking for 38 hrs. to Apple, Att&T, AOL and AIM)
Now my iPhoto app. (5.0.4) takes 2 minutes 30 seconds to open.
When I run First Aid in Disk Utilities I get the following message. NO matter how many times I run it.
Please don't read all of this but just note the second line starts with the iPhoto problems. But in the first line it mentions:

I don't have any iLifeMediaBrowser?????

The next messages mention my I guess screwed up iPhoto problems.

I may have a solution (more like a work around) to the permissions repair slowness.

I had a problem with my powermac G5 where I was receiving the grey screen (of death). I was told to try repairing permissions. I tried several times but each time the process got stuck at 3 minutes and would seemingly never complete. I always stopped it after around 15 minutes because I'm impatient.

One thing I noticed though was that the time it took to complete 1 file increased several fold as time progressed. This didn't make sense because it was doing the same thing for each file (or something very similar). The only thing that was continuously growing during the process was the user interface component where all the logging details were being displayed. I figured that maybe it was the component that couldn't cope with the volumes of data being logged (displayed) on the screen. In my particular case I had a lot of files that needed repair!

Well, that was it. I restarted disk utility and immediately unchecked the "Show Details" box so the information would not be logged to the screen. I restarted the process and I even minimized the window just to be safe. It completed in about 4 minutes!!!

I still have to test to see if the grey screen comes back but at least I'm not spending all day waiting for permissions repair!!!
