Setting up usb printer via router

So, I have iMac G5 connected to ASUS WL-520GU router via ethernet and printer Canon iP5000 connected to usb port on router. I can't setting up my printer in Mac OS X. First I install printer driver from CD, the I add new IP Printer in Printer Setup Utility with next parameters:
Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
Address: 192.168.1.1 (router address)
Queue: lp
Name: Canon iP5000
Location: <empty field>
Print Using: Generic Postscript Printer (here I can't select my printer)

And that doesn't work.

How I can do that?

iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Hi there,

There are two things about your connection.

The first is the USB port on the router. I would confirm by checking the ASUS documentation that the you can access the USB port simply by entering LP for the queue name. I would have thought that some other name would have been required.

The second things is that you will not be able to use a Generic PostScript driver for the printer model, as the iP5000 is not a PostScript device. You also cannot use the Canon provided printer driver, as it has not been designed to work with these types of network connections. What you need to do is download one of the newer stable release versions of the Gutenprint driver set. After installing this driver set, you will find the 'Canon PIXMA IP5000 - CUPS + Gutenprint' in the Print Using menu. Select this to complete your printer queue creation.
