Q: Earphones keep breaking

I keep on breaking my earphones. First, I had to return my iPod Shuffle earphones. Now, my iPhone earphones are in repear (already for three weeks!!) and now my Shuffle earphones are broken again. What am I doing wrong????

After a while (a couple of weeks) the sound gets slightly distorted in one (or both) speakers. Especially low tones distort quite a lot.

Do I have to do something special with them? I just put them in my pocket when not using them, but apparently they are too fragile for that? Do others have the some problems? I know their sound quality is very poor overall, but after a few weeks of usage they completely fail and that's a whole other issue I guess.

I am returning mine for the third time. I have had this latest set for less than 14 days before the sound faded in the left ear bud again. Like the original poster I cannot see that I am being unduly harsh in my use. I am so worried about putting the wires under stress that I am not using the provided carry case as I have to really stretch the set to get them to wrap correctly. It has been so much hassle to return them to Apple due to lack of serial number that allows them to easily identify the correct product. I think I will ask for a refund and try my luck with another type of in-ear phones. I just find it such a pity as when they worked this product was comfortable and well-worth the price.

What's happening is every time you put any tension or stress on that side it's weakening the wire going into the ear bud. Every time you move it or try to get it to work you're weakening the connection or solder more, so eventually the wire or the connection breaks.
