Printing to Ricoh MP 2500

I read an earlier thread about a guy who was confused on how to print to his network printer. I followed all the instructions given in the thread (download footmatic, pxlmono, etc...) but am confused on which driver to select when I go to "other."

I tried the Ricoh MP 2500 pxlmono driver, the Ricoh MP 2500 pxlcolor driver, and the generic-pcl 6_pclxl pxlmono driver. NON WORKED!!!

It shows a printer is idle in my system preferences, but when I print from word or from email, nothing goes into the queue. I am also using the LPD printer as suggested.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Mac Book, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Try printing another document. After it fails, open the Print & Fax System Preference. Double click on the printer you tried on the left side of the window. This will open the printer proxy window. When that opens use the Printer menu and select *Log & History*. This will open the Console and display a log of what happened.

Are there any errors that appear. You may want to copy about twenty lines of the log and paste it in a response for us to look at.

You may have better luck setting up the printer using the JetDirect - Socket protocol rather than the LPD protocol.

I tired printing to the Jet HP Direct port and got the message above. Also, which driver am I supposed to use? This morning when I tested it again, I used the Ricoh MP 2500 pxlmono driver.

The driver depends on which printer you have. Ricoh has an MP 2500 and an MP C2500. The difference being that the Ricoh MC C2500 is a color printer. The MP 2500 is black and white only.

I 17/Feb/2009:08:56:31 -0600 Setting 10_99_406 device-uri to "socket://10.99.40.6/?bidi" (was "file:/dev/null".)

The printer does not appear to be set up properly for using the JetDirect - Socket protocol. Please delete that printer and try setting it up again. This time enter the printer address as 10.99.40.6:9100. Hopefully that will allow you to print. If the job fails, please post back with the log report like the last post.

Matt,

When I type in the new IP address, it gives me a choice... either the Ricoh MP C2500 PS or Ricoh MP C2500 PXL. Which one do I choose?

And yes, we do have the Ricoh MP C2500, but we are not allowed to print in color. We have to have a password for that. When setting up on a PC, our IT guy makes us go in and change the printer settings to B&W which allows everyone else to print. I have looked for printer settings after installing on my Mac, but cannot find any. I have to physically go in and change to B&W for each document I print.

But, it still didnt print this time... & I used the MP C2500 pxlcolor driver this time and the LPD port.

The choice depends on whether the optional PostScript module is installed. Most of the time, companies do not spend the extra money for the PostScript module. For now, anyway, use the Ricoh MP 2500 PXL.

The main objective is to get you printing. We can always deal with PostScript and enabling color printing later.

But, it still didnt print this time... & I used the MP C2500 pxlcolor driver this time and the LPD port.
I 17/Feb/2009:09:43:06 -0600 Setting 10_99_406 device-uri to "lpd://10.99.40.6:9100/" (was "file:/dev/null".)

Please start again. Use JetDirect - Socket with the printer address 10.99.40.6:9100. The ":9100" refers to the port that is to be used for communications. LPD does not use this port.

In recap, you want to start over. Set up a printer to use the JetDirect-Socket protocol. Use 10.99.40.6:9100 for the printer address and choose the Ricoh MP 2500 PXL driver.

Matt,

I went in and tried the HP Direct port, typed in 10.99.40.6:9100, chose the pxl printer, and picked the Ricoh MP 2500 pxlmono driver, not the MP C2500 pxlcolor driver. Showed two jobs in the queue, went through, but nothing came out of the printer...

Good. You did your part just fine. It does appear that there is a problem with the printing system when adding the printer using JetDirect. The system is adding "?bidi" to the end of the device address.

I [17/Feb/2009:10:50:02 -0600] Setting 10_99_406 device-uri to "socket://10.99.40.6:9100/?bidi" (was "file:/dev/null".)

That is the first time I have seen that happen. I can reproduce it on my computer, so it is not something wrong with your computer.

There are other ways to add a printer in OS X. I would ask that you delete the printer that you created and doesn't print. Next, I would have you try adding the printer through the web interface of the printing system. Use the browser of your choice and go to http://127.0.0.1:631/admin?op=add-printer

Fill in a Name for the printer such as RicohMP2500 and click Continue. Select AppSocket/HP JetDirect for the Device and click Continue. On the following page you need to enter the *Device URI*. The "socket" part is already filled in. The full *Device URI* should be socket://10.99.40.6:9100. After that is entered, click Continue. After that you will come to a couple of pages to select the Make and Model for you printer. These should be self-explanatory. Make the appropriate choices and click Continue.

You will be presented with a drop down sheet where you will need to enter the short user name and password for an administrator's account on your computer. Presumably, that would be your short user name and password.

Once the authentication is compeleted, you will see a message that the operation was successful. A short time later, the window will change and you will be able to set any options and/or defaults you want for the printer. Click the save changes button after you have made any adjustments necessary.

Now try printing a document. Any luck?

Matt

Matt,

Just wanted to say thank you and that your information was amazing. I had no problem printing this morning once I set the printer up through my web browser.

I do have one other question, and if you cannot tell, I know just enough about computers (Macs) to get by but not enough to really solve issues by myself.

We have a scanning feature on the Ricoh that I would like to work with my computer. Basically, if I scan on the machine I would like it to go to a folder on my computer. Any way to do this?

Thanks again for the help. I owe you something at some point in your life!!
