iTunes menu bar is missing???

Hi,

Just picked up my first Mac today. When I open iTunes there is no menu bar like on a Windows machine. I need to change some of my preferences, but cannot find the menu bar all the help pages tell me should be there. Where did the menu go and how do I re-display. FYI it was missing out of the box when I first powered up.
