I have the first generation 16Gb iPod Touch and it has suddenly it's started to crackle and I lose my left speaker on my headphones. I have tried another pair of headphone and it still does it with them so it looks like the jack on the iPod. Is there a way of repairing this ?

    keep us posted please!
i have a 1st gen (i think) iTouch and the headphone jack as nearly quit working. i don't get the crackling like you have described but i get only about "half" of the sound from the headphone jack. when i move the plug around in the jack the "full" sound comes to life.
both channels work but you can def tell it's not working properly.

also i'm interested to know if anyone makes the iTouch cord with a 1/8 mini-phono plug on the opposite end. i was hoping the cable would exist and i wouldn't need to have my iTouch sent away for repair.

yup...that worked. i wouldn't have thought it was dirty cus i've kept it inside either in the house or my jeep.
however my father suggested i use cable clean aka contact cleaner and spray up inside the thing.
    my bad.
it plays but the screen looks like it has a picture of a huge cloud coming from the bottom of the screen now lol.
    i'll keep it for now.

I have this same issue too, on a 2nd gen 16gb touch.

I'll try to clean the jack... see if that works.
