Sound just stopped playing on .avi files with QuickTime Player

The sound just stopped playing on .avi files on quicktime-

Quicktime still plays video on .avi's- also plays normally for mpegs and quicktime video files-

it does not play the sound for a file marked- VFW - but I don't use that file much so I am not certain it did before-

sound works on divx player and on all other application-

reinstalled quicktime, chec sound levels, spent half an hour on the phone with apple- tried reinstalling some codecs, and moving preferences files in library to desktop-

- no luck-

any suggestions?

please?

Tried installing Perian? That expands QT playback for a lot of AVI files. You may need to clear out some of the other codecs though because Perian has its own components for many of them and they might compete.

Also try VLC player.

Hi Ari and welcome to the forums!

You need to download and install Perian from http://perian.org/

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

Thank You Limnos and Klaus-

While others had suggested VLC, Perian actually solved my problem and allowed me to continue using Quicktime for various video file formats-

I didn't need to do anything other than install it, no codec changes were required- it was easy and direct- Thanks!

I will look into adding VLC to my video arsenal, just in case I have other problems in the future, and I will review the additional information from Klaus.

I appreciate the prompt and helpful advice!

Ari
