Q: iTunes Library cannot be saved (Error -54)

Hey guys,

Recently started getting the following error "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occured (-54)."

I've searched the forums and Google, but can't seem to find a solution which fixes the error and which does not delete my ratings and playcounts.

Any help appreciated!

    This solved it for me:

Reset my warnings via the advanced menu.

Doesn't that just remove the error notifications, but leaves the problem itself, of the library file not being saved?

Don't know exacttly what it does. All I know is that I had the issue before I did it and after that it was gone. Just give it a shot.

I've already solved the issue, through repairing disk permissions.  (Applications>Disk Utility>Repair Permissions)

    Have a great day!

I have tried deleting iTunesPrefs and iTunesPrefs.plist files through DiskAid.

    Reset Warning and Cache.

Export and Import Library, but still i am getting same error message.

"Attempting to copy disk "IPhone" failed. An unknown error occured (-54)"

Kindly help me, i am not able to put any songs in my Iphone.

I was seeing this error all of a sudden today while trying to import a CD and it would not add the imported music to my Library.

"The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occured (-54)."

However, I did the following steps listed in an earlier post and it solved the problem without doing anything else.

Go to iTunes, "File", choose export library.

Save the library.xml file on your desktop.

Quit iTunes, delete the library files in the iTunes folder ( I just moved it to the Trash, but did not empty it).

Relaunch iTunes, go to "File", click on "Add to Library" and choose the newly exported library.xml file.

Import CD worked fine after that.

    Many thanks for the solution!

@nomond, Ok so I was getting the same error "The iTunes Library file.... (-54)." And I did what you recommended above. I saved the library file onto the desktop, quit iTunes and moved the library files from the iTunes folder to the trash. Then I relaunched and from File clicked "Add to Library" file that was sitting on the desktop.

This made all of my music disappear and I haven't been able to get it back. I know the music is still there somewhere. I have even tried to take the files out of the trash and put them back and nothing?

I am worried now that I have lost my playlists and Genius lists etc. Not to mention I don't even know the best way to map my music back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated I have been without music for a week.

    Mike

Thanks Annalea, that fixed it for me as well. I assume that lostdogs solves those pesky housefire problems by pulling the battery in the smoke alarm. jeesh.

I used Repair Permissions and it seemed to solve the iTunes problem, however, it completely knocked out my HP printer, which I now cannot open. (I get the 'Power PC apps are no longer supported' message.) It was working fine this morning. Anyone know how I can restore it? I've tried everything I can think of and have wasted an hour doing it. Thanks!

    Janeygirl711,

    Go to http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html.

This site provides HP drivers and software for all their printers.  You could try installing the latest drivers and software for your printer and see if that gets it up and running again.  Even if you had the most up to date drivers and software doing a reinstall may be advised as something may have been corrupted or changed when you did the repair permissions.

Good luck.  Let us know if this helps.

    Mr. Luigi
