Use of Apple TV overseas

I'm in the military, moving to Japan this summer. According to the Apple page, I can't get movies/tv shows via Apple TV in Japan. Does anyone know if this means that my US Apple account is no good overseas? Or can I still access the US version of iTunes, since I'm logging in using a US based account? Hope that makes sense!

The AppleTV has a universal transformer, only the plug on the lead differs from place to place.

Many reports of US users using them abroad via their home iTunes accounts.
The practice seems to be allowed currently, presumably to accomodate travellers, but in theory they could stop the functionality based upon your IP address if it's recognised as an overseas one.
