.img VS .dmg

What is the difference?

When creating an image from a project directly from iDVD, an .img file produced.

When creating an image from a DVD using the disk utility, a .dmg file is produced.

In general there might be just internal differences. IMG is the same as ISO = raw data that can be burned to disk directly. DMG - in certain cases can be compressed "img" and so having a little different header which describe the stored inside data.

In Mac you can use both without difference. If you are planning to use image within Mac and Windows IMG would be better for compatibility.
