Connect 2.5mm Headset

I'd like to be able to connect my standard cellphone headset (with 2.5mm plug) to my iPod Touch 2G. Can I do this with some adapter (which?) and use Griffin's iTalk to record? Or do I still need Griffin's SmartTalk with an adapter?

No, I don't want to use Apple's earphones -- I want to use the headset that I'm comfortable with. Just looking for the adapter that is known to work as I've described. Thanks!

Hello, Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Yes you will need some sort of Adapter as the iPod Touch uses a 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack.

There are many headphones designed for the iPod Touch that you can choose from. Many models listed on our store or even at your local electronics store.

You would need to have an adapter that connects to a 3.5-mm jack and then on top connects to a 2.5 mm plug

If you do a search online for "connect a 2.5 mm connector to 3.5 mm audio jack" you will find a list of shopping results. Some of these adapters sell for less then $3

Oh, believe me, I've searched for an adapter and found a number of them that might work. Determining whether or not they'll work from their description is not as easy as you might think, though.

One on Buy.com shows a 3-ring male connector, while my Apple earbuds have a 2-ring connector. Another on Amazon.com says, cryptically, "The microphone portion of the 2.5 mm plug has not been wired into the design, which keeps noise to a minimum so that you can use your cell phone accessories with other devices." So will the mic in my headset work? Or will even adding the SmartTalk work?

So I'm looking for a reply from someone who actually uses a 3.5mm plug to 2.5mm jack adapter with the iPod Touch and who perhaps is also using their headset to record.

The pinouts for the iPhone are probably different from those for the iPod Touch. I say "probably" because the iPhone uses a 4-pole connector, while the earphone that came with the iPod Touch has a 3-pole connector.

In any case, I'm not looking to wire my own, just looking for an adapter that's been used by someone else in my predicament. Also wanting to know if the Griffin SmartTalk can be used in that configuration.
