Q: Of all the iMac display problems here, has anyone seen this yet? (PHOTO)

Take a look at what I've been experiencing. I took this photo with my iPhone, so while it may appear that there are gradation issues or other irregularities, my real concern is the top center of the image. I've had my 24in iMac for about 8 months and this issue began about two months after purchasing it, but since I work at home and am on this computer all day, every day, I haven't haven't been able to afford the time to get it fixed. This blotch is NOT on the glass and it almost doesn't make sense to call it a "blotch" since you can clearly see some kind of patterning going on. It's the LCD itself. In the corners you can see some streaking going on which IS on the glass, but the stuff at center top is not. It seems to be getting worse, so I'm going to have to take it in, but I just wanted to know if anyone out there had anything similar going on. I am.....shall we say, nonplussed about this and have been since it started.

The picture at the top of this thread is actually dirt inside the LCD. In my opinion it's a design flaw, as the fans blow air through the inside of the panel and the panel is not fully sealed.

I had the same problem and ended up taking the whole machine apart (including LCD). After cleaning it, it did not reappear, but the computer was since then moved to my office.

My appartment (where this occurred) is clean, not dusty, not much outside dust ... the only thing I could think of would be candles or occasional incense sticks that were in the same room.

I understand your indignation and how my gratitude could seem absurd. The fact that it is being replaced with the new 27'' which is a more powerful machine with a different and I'm confident better screen is pleasing to me. If it were not being replaced by a "new" product and it was being addressed with more futile band-aids I would have had to work out my aggression in my martial arts class or I'd be wrestling someone in the Apple Store. Why not contact an Apple customer service rep and express your complaint to him/her and tame your incredulity about my gratitude. I had to send a photo in to Apple (requested) which they sent to engineering. They scapegoated my environment which I did not accept: 24 hours later: a new 27'' is in the mail. Did you call and demand?

    Dennis,

Thank you for your thoughtfull and humorous response. You are right, I should be more vocal directly with Apple than venting here. You certainly do seem to have been treated well.

Having said that I must point out that I have seen a bit of discussion on this forum about screen issues with the new 27 inch models as well. I hope you are able to avoid getting that. Here is a link:

If any 27'' screen issues happen I'm getting an iMac exorcist. We'll see! My best. d

This is why I got Apple Care! $160 extra dollars peace of mind for three years. If a problem does not pop up in three years it rarely ever does. It is unfortunate you let so much time lapse. I would have taken it to Apple the next day.

This thread has been here since Feb and it's what... 3 pages long? Millions of iMac's sold. Not really a MAJOR design flaw. I would hate it if it happened to my computer... the worse thing is that most times the costs of fixing a display is so high one might as well buy a new computer.

All the problems for the iMac displays here on these posts are not the same. The one I am having, and it is the same as the full iMac pic on the firt page of posts, is when the sun hits the display. If you touch the display it is VERY hot. If you pull the iMac out of the sun, the splotches go away. Put the computer back in the sun, and the splotches come back. It is a problem with either direct sunlight or heat on the screen. I can even put my finger over the splotch, wait 10 secs, and when I pull away the section where my finger was had shrinked. It is either UV rays or heat related.

I am going to call Apple Care as I work for a higher education institution, and see if I can get some concrete answers.

I have the same problem an i bought my 24" in October
When the computer is turned on, i don't see it but when it's off then i see a grey area in the top of my screen and it's better to see in the left corner but it is all over the top of my screen.

Is this the beginning of more trouble?!

I'm glad they took care of you Dennis. I'm having the same problem although I have a one of new 21.5" iMacs. It looks like dirt in the upper left hand corner. It's only visible if I have a white screen displayed. Very faint right now, but this is a brand new machine. I'm gonna call apple care and hopefully they'll address it the same way they did you.

Man is this strangely ironic!! Indeed I have been grateful for the 27 inch replacement but just started noticing a 1.5 inch kind of outline stain (I just showed my 15 y.o. daughter who said it looked like a "fetus"). Now it is (as had been the different quality stains more similar to page one on the original 20" and the replaced 24'') there on the screen for anyone to see when the background is white or very light. The screen has been well and carefully cleaned, no local cooking, nonsmoker, etc but no way Apple will believe it is not my fault if I have a "3rd'' blemish occurring on a third iMac!. I had not had a need to come back to this discussion thinking my new 27'' had transcended any screen problems. d
