music erased from ipod (all by itself?), now won't sync

I just got my new iTunes library (on my new laptop) all set up and sync'd my iPod (40GB, circa 2004) with over 4000 songs, no problem-the songs are all there. Then I remembered some cds I still had to put into the iTunes library, about 100 more songs. Then, when I went to re-sync my iPod ALL of my music was wiped out! In iTunes it shows my iPod under Devices, and then shows Music (empty), and playlists and such (don't remember this shown before).

Now I've reset my iPod, updated the software, but iTunes still won't sync my library! What is wrong? Do I have something unchecked that shouldn't be. Or visa versa?

When you select the iPod under DEVICES in iTunes, make sure +Manually manage music+ on the Summary tab is NOT checked.

Also, on the Music tab, make sure +Sync music+ is checked, and +All songs and playlists+ is selected.

If it still is not syncing, you should use the Restore button in iTunes to erase the iPod's hard drive and initialize the iPod's software. Then sync it.
