iDVD '08 multiplexing error

I continue to have these multiplexing errors when I get to the burn/writing stage. Is there anything new about a resolution to this issue? Do I have to let iDVD complete the encoding before I go to "Burn"? The Apple experts have not been able to help me yet.

Thanks,
Rookie

A few questions:

1. which of the two Pioneer 112 S-Drives on your mac are you using to burn with?

2. have you tried burning to Verbatim dvd-r on BOTH S-drives? and if so, did you get the same results on both burners?

3. are you using the latest firmware? (if not, you'll need to update now before going any further). run apple's software updater if you haven't already.

4. Did you install the 2nd S-Drive yourself? or was it professionally installed for you?

5. Are both S-Drives on the very same bus? And if so, have you tried a test burn on the stock drive without the second drive attached? (simply disconnect the second drive from the bus while your mac is powered off /shut down and then power back up). Make certain you are grounded to avoid electric /static discharge / It's a good idea use a grounding strap when disconnecting the second drive or reconnecting. If you don't have one then simply touch the metal frame to the mac prior to working on it.

6. Have you been able to make a disc image to the desktop, and then burn from that image to Verbatim Dvd-R at 4x or slower?

7. Did you remember to select which drive you want to burn from within iDvd prior to burning a dvd?

8. Have you tried an alternate app to burn from (ie, Toast)?

SDmacuser, here are the answers to your questions. I still would like to know if I must let the iDVD program encode the entire project before I burn it.

Thanks for the help,
Rookie

A few questions:
1. which of the two Pioneer 112 S-Drives on your mac are you using to burn with?
Most of the time iDVD opens the top (1) burner but sometime the bottom one.
2. have you tried burning to Verbatim dvd-r on BOTH S-drives? and if so, did you get the same results on both burners? Only used Ridata and Sony -r disks. Disks not the problem as it never gets to the write stage, poops out during the encoding stage.

3. are you using the latest firmware? (if not, you'll need to update now before going any further). run apple's software updater if you haven't already. All updates were loaded and all permissions repaired. I also uninstalled iDVD and reinstalled it with the updates.

4. Did you install the 2nd S-Drive yourself? or was it professionally installed for you? I professionally installed the second drive.

Yes/No/Not touching

6. Have you been able to make a disc image to the desktop, and then burn from that image to Verbatim Dvd-R at 4x or slower? I have burned to disks and made images. Have gotten the multipexing error while trying to do both. I remember doing 3 images successfully but got the error on the 4th one.

7. Did you remember to select which drive you want to burn from within iDvd prior to burning a dvd?
I don't remember having the option of this drive to select. When I select burn the program opens a drive - sometimes 1 and sometimes 2.

8. Have you tried an alternate app to burn from (ie, Toast)? Toast works just fine but doesn't have all the capabilities of iDVD such as themes. Toast does a great job burning the images.

Must you? ...... No.

Do I recommend it? ....... Yes.

Sure can't hurt to allow iDvd to finish encoding prior to burning. It's actually a good practice. Things tend to run smoother and with fewer errors.

If you haven't already please drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash and Restart your mac. (if you have already done this step then keep reading).

Also, your mac should allow you to select the burner you wish to use to create an iDvd. Are you seeing this option offered to you prior to the actual burn (and per the above image / example)?

I'll try selecting the drive the next time but it has burned project with both of them.

I have twice deleted the iDVDplist but still got the error. Reinstalled the total software package while deleting the plist. Then burned 3 disk images successully but the error came back on the 4th try.

next project I'll let the program finish the encoding before trying to burn. I just assumed that it was doing the necessary in the burn process when it said "encoding........".

Still don't feel good about this. Even the Apple expects were shooting in the dark.

Thanks,
Rookie

RiData is good for this test so please use it. (that or Verbatim)

Select the first drive on your mac for this burn test.

If this still doesn't help, then we need to disconnect the second burner (just while we run this test) in order to see if this helps by returning the mac to it's original / factory state.

Are there any other 3rd party devices attached to your mac?

(ie, any external FW or USB hard drives ? .... if so disconnect them while we test your system).

Final suggestion is to run an Extended Hardware Test on your mac (normally this is done from the Hardware Test CD that shipped with your mac). If you simply never received such a cd, then let me know and I'll post an alternate procedure to run this same test.

Ok.. i don´t know what kind of project are you doing.. but i had the same problem several times... if your drive was working nice before.. the problem could be the same that mine... The problem is the song.. Some time.. i downloaded music form limewire and use it in my project.. Imove or even FCP don´t dectect the problem and the movie proccess well.. but when i try to burn the dvd..iDVD cannot econding the music..(i think is an error in the file) The problem is iDVD don´t tell you what is the problem.. Try to change the song or song used in you project and try again..
I had the same problem more than 7 times.. and alway is the same. In some time i was crazy to figure what prblem is.. but try with other computer if you have and you can eliminate the doubt. The same problem i had in difrenetn machines and diferents MAC OS versions. Mybe is not the dirve
Good Look

I have a different angle to offer.

I started to have this exact problem today with a project that I had no problems with before. I didn't even attempt to burn a disc, I simply wanted to create a disc image (to the desktop). I kept getting multiplexing errors. I realized that these errors occurred even before the creation of the image began, but during the encoding of the DVD assets. The encoded assets are created within the project package. At that time I remembered that I have move my iDVD project from my internal drive to a network drive. That is when the problems began. So I moved the iDVD project back to the internal drive, and everything was fine after that, even if I chose to have the disk image be created on the network drive. I suppose the were issues when writing to the project package sitting on the network drive.

So, perhaps the iDVD project you are having issues with is residing on a shared drive, or a drive with slower write speeds? If yes, try moving the project to your internal drive.
