Spilled coke on macbook

I feel like crap now, but last night I spilled coke on my 4 month laptop.
I tried to look up online to see what to do and they told me to take out my battery and
dry it as much as possible which I did. when I took out my battery it wasnt wet except for a drop.
My hard drive was also not wet except for a couple of drops. I'm taking it to the apple store tomorrow
but I wanted to know how much the estimated amount I would have to pay to get it fixed be.
When it spilled the speakers sounded strange and the battery lights on the left of my macbook
would start blinking when pressed. I took out the charger and put it on a dry towel.
Please help and maybe give some advice or tips. Please and thank you. 🙂

I just got my macbook back from being repaired. I spilled coffee on it and the total cost came out to be around $800. Could have bought a new HP for that cost.

I say cut your losses and buy a cheap Windows Laptop for the cost of the repair.

Apple really needs to offer a protection plan becasue these laptops are far too fragile.

If you wanted a coke proof machine, get one in a:

http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/toughstories.asp?cmsp=Toughbook%20Site%20Promotions-_-Right%20Hand%20Promo--Tough%20Stories%20Promo

It is the only one in the market that is resistent to all spills, and most kinds of drops.

Of course it is not resistent to Windows viruses any more than the next Windows machine. I'd rather have a machine that when I act responsibly with where I put it and what I put on it that's free work well, than one that I have to pay a constant subscription to anti-virus utilities to keep healthy.

And if you feel you are accident prone, there is always:

http://www.safeware.com/

That's true insurance, not just warranty against defects.

Apple does offer a protection plan in the form of a standard or extended warranty. But no protection plan covers spilling Coke on the computer, not even that "cheap Windows Laptop."

And in what way does spilling Coke on a laptop suggest fragility on the part of the laptop?

Because the amount of money I paid to get mine repaired means I can make such an accusation. If you have never broken yours then you can not make such a rebuttal.

And yes, most major PC vendors offer accidental protection plans. These plans allow for well accidents, hence the name.

They will offer them. But if you don't buy them, and have an accident before you buy them, you will still be stuck with the full bill for repair.

When you first bought the Mac, you should have considered what you were going to bring into the room with it, read the manual that came with it, which clearly says that it is NOT indestructable, and asked around about accident protection programs which do exist for it, as we have indicated Safeware is one many know about. This is a good lesson for you to read the warranty that comes with the product it says that they are not responsible for any accidents.

Unfortunately your complaints are specious because you did not read the literature that has been available from the beginning.

In the future buyer beware. Always read what comes with a product, and never assume it comes with it without written justification.

I'm sorry, but my college would not allow anyone into their computer rooms with food or drink. If your school did not make such restrictions, that's a failing of the school system you are in.

My but you're a rude fellow.

If you have never broken yours then you can not make such a rebuttal.

Nonsense. I most certainly can make any rebuttal I wish. If you broke your computer, then take responsibility for your fault. Don't blame the manufacturers fro not protecting you against your own carelessness or negligence. Your complaint is baseless.

And yes, most major PC vendors offer accidental protection plans. These plans allow for well accidents, hence the name.

Oh, who in particular? How much does it cost? Why don't you have such coverage in your car or home insurance? Most accident insurance doesn't cover negligence on the part of the insured. Spilling Coke isn't an accident, it's carelessness.

Hi,

One needn't buy a Toughbook to get a spill resistant keyboard. Toshiba Portege R500 and several Lenovo Thinkpad ( http://www.pc.ibm.com/europe/engineered/en/keyboard.html?europe&cc=europe) models come to mind.

Since design leadership is often a key focus of Apple products, and users dumping liquid on their keyboards is so common, it is a bit of a surprise the MacBook design does not incorporate spill resistant technology.

I strongly encourage notebook PC/Mac owners to get an accidental damage rider on their home owner's or renter's insurance policies. It is very inexpensive coverage, albeit not retroactive coverage.

Also, I'll take a jab at Applecare for not offering accident insurance as an add-on option. Other manufacturers do offer accident coverage options; for instance Toshiba T-plan.
