Evoluent VerticalMouse3 vs. 3M Ergonomic Mouse
Has anyone had any experience with either of these mice or better yet, done a comparison?
I'm looking for an ergonomic mouse to ease Intermittant wrist, finger, forearm and elbow pain from repetitive motion (clicking and scroll-wheeling) with a conventional mouse with wrist and arm in the prone position.
The *Evoluent VerticalMouse 3* functions more or less like a conventional mouse -- flipped on its side. The functionality of buttons/scroll wheel is essentially like a conventional mouse but allows one's hand and wrist to remain in a more vertical, "handshake" position, putting much less stress on the wrist and other joints. With five programmable buttons, it appears to be fairly popular. Though Evoluent does not directly support button programability on the Mac, programability can be had by downloading *USB Overdrive* (shareware).
Given that I scroll a lot, I find the scroll-wheel motion on a conventional mouse tiresome.
The *3M Ergonomic Mouse,* with its joystick-style architecture, also allows one to maintain vertical positioning of the wrist and arm, but the joystick does not pivot. It's strictly a handle for moving the entire mouse north-south, east-west, etc. and in turn, the cursor on your screen.
The functionality of its buttons is entirely different than a convention mouse. There is a toggle-style thumb-operated button at the top of the stick utilized for both left or right clicking. Seems simple and natural enough once you get used to it.
The 3M has no scroll wheel. When pressed, a third button on the shaft (positioned similarly to a trigger on a conventional joy stick) converts the lateral north-south movement of the mouse to a scrolling function whose sensitivity can be programmed in mouse preferences.
3M says this function works in SOME APPLICATIONS -- inferring that if one wants to scroll in OTHER applications, one may be reduced to clicking on scrolling arrows on a web page or application window.
_I'm wondering whether anyone has used this *3M mouse* with *OS X Leopard* with an application like Safari. Does the *scroll function* work in *Safari? Mail? Logic Studio? Final Cut Pro?*_
Any feedback on either of these devices -- particularly the *3M Ergonomic Mouse,* would be greatly appreciated.
