Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Well.. I thought I would add my MBP to the list!!! I have been loyal to Apple for a very long time but this is absurd.
Apple stand up to your product and allow our drives to be fixed, your cost.
My MBP is 18 months old, has never traveled other than from desk to living room. The drive does the same thing all the other posts say, exactly the same thing... Hmmmm, sounds like an epidemic to me!!! Sounds like faulty hardware me!!!
I will likely buy an external drive.

My HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N has the same problems.

Kinda funny since I paid money when it was out of warranty to fix my scree,n which died. A little bit after the 90 day warranty on the repair my screen started exhibiting the same problems as before as did my drive.

You're all right: there IS a problem, and no, Apple isn't taking the full measure of it. That's sad, and it makes me wonder: when the time comes to replace my MBP, will I buy another Mac...? The jury's still out on this one...

Well, finally got time to use a Cleaning Disc, and it worked. Don't know what else to say, except suggesting anyone who hasn't, to try it. That seems crazy, but it works.

Then you are one of the lucky few. For most of us, the drive just spits the cleaning disc back out before it can do its thing.

    Mixed results here.

I purchased a Memorex cleaning disk, and after several attempts trying to get it to load, it worked. I was able to see the tracks in iTunes and listen to the audio on the disk. I put it on a loop in iTunes and let it run for 15-20 minutes.

However, when I try to load a DVD or Music CD, the drive still spits it out.

I find it strange that the cleaning CD works properly, but that any other media gets spit out.

dug out my cleaning disc (with brushes on the underside) and loaded 3 times into the drive but it kept spitting it out so tried from win xp vmware fusion. again this just spat it out but the next time i went to the vmware setting and deselected auto detect drive and connect to physical drive. it then loaded up without hesitation. run the cleaning track a few times (only 5 sec long each time) and shut down windows.

drive now seems to be reading discs that it spat out earlier today but i'm a little skeptical and confused as to how long this will last. by changing the setting in vmware it read without any problems indicating a software problem but mayb this is what cured the drive rather than the clean? do people having these problems also have os emulation software installed that could be causing some kind of conflict?

FWIW, I had VMWare Fusion installed, but never running when I had my disc issues.

And guess what ... I can't play DVDs anymore. CD's work fine with a very few exceptions, but DVDs ... No chance. It whirrs for a bit, makes a couple of attempts and then out they come. I've tried all these possible cures but no result.

That noise it makes when the disks go in and out was quite endearing at first ...

This is becoming utterly ridiculous. If "Host" is monitoring this thread (of course it is...), please tell the powers that be that there's something rotten in their kingdom...

To not have an Apple technician chime in on this issue is just ridiculous. If there is a know problem just say so - at least we know we need a new superdrive.
