Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

FIXED SPINNING DISC/EJECT:  Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility  Select drive/Verify Disk Permissions/Repair Disk Permissions.  Reboot Computer:  Clean Optical Reader: (I sprayed optical lens cleaner on a disk, ran it and then put in a clean disk, which worked)    I did note that nearly a million people viewed this post with over 1100 replies!  Good luck Steve C

In my case, drive worked fine for 3 years, then stopped reading disks.

Credit card wrapped in microfiber had no effect for me.

Spraying with compressed air worked like a charm -  reads all disks now!

I've been having the same issue as most of you. My Cd drive spins and acts like its reading but spits out the disc (don't matter what kind) after a few sec's. So I decided to venture and just look to see if I had or, something was rested when i did an software update. BAM!!! fixed it. Go to your system preferences, select CD & DVDS. They'll be like 6 questions on how you want your mac to open these cd/dvds. Make sure that you don't have anything set to ignore. BOOM! changed all the ones that were set to ignore and now it works. Good luck, hopefully this helps a bunch of you. Sorry if you guys have already found a fix and posted it. I didn't want to read the last 10 years on this thread to find out if anyone else did.

Thank you for posting this.  This worked on my Mac. I hadn't used the drive in about a year and I think I may have used it a total of a dozen times. With all of the updates to settings it appears that was the problem. Thank you for posting this.

The latest OS X doesn't have repair permissions.

And btw: I have the drive issue, too, with both my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

Somewhen I read a solution about deleting a kind of database file to reset the drive, but I can't find it anymore

    Macbook Pro CD/DVD Drive FIX!

Same here my DVD drive couldn't read any disks. Thanks for this forum I put 2 and 2 together and figured out that it may be too dirty inside the DVD drive.

Here is what I did that worked:

    - Shutdown your Macbook Pro and if you can take out the battery do so also just in case for electrical shock.

    - I used the cloth that I have to clean my glasses and I wrapped it around a steel ruler which is very thin. If you don't have a steel ruler you can use a flexible butter knife it will work as well. DO NOT USE A SHARP KNIFE, you will destroy the drive inside.

    - I passed it inside the DVD drive, going back and forth, side by side a few times and made sure not to cut the front entrance DVD flaps of the Macbook Pro.

    - Then I gently pulled the ruler out and found lots of dirt around the glass cleaner cloth.

    - Put the Battery back in.

    - Turned the Macbook Pro on, entered a DVD and a low pitch sound rang that read the DVD. The DVD popped up right away on my desktop! WOW!!!!!!

Hope this will help you guys, let me know if it helps! ;-)

PROBLEM SOLVED........I had this problem with my MBP-13 inch Mid 2010. I have tried many different solutions proposed here but unfortunately they weren't effective. Finally i noticed from a post that this is Mac-OSX DVD Drive calibration issue. Super simple solution : keep your MBP's right side up and hold it up when you are trying to insert any CD or DVD. Meanwhile the left side should be on a table so you should keep your macbook with an angle like 60 degree.

I had this problem last week. Tried all the fixes, PRAM, deleting system files etc. Thought the can of compressed air was a last resort before going to the Apple Store to be told I need a new Super-Drive. Couldn't believe it worked. Drive back to normal. I would now recommend the compressed air as the first thing anyone tries.

    Good luck.
