Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Me as well. Annoyingly the drive reads some CD's/DVDs and not others.
    C'mon Apple get it sorted.

Yeah, mine's doing the same. Nothing I did, just randomly, stopped working. =p I've tried everything and am a broke college student that honestly can't afford to be PAYING apple to fix their own problems. -_-

The discussion boards really are a place for users to help each other, but in this case we shouldn't expect the right people at apple to be reading this thread. We should all take Apple's advice and use their formal avenues to report a problem with these drives. Visit http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and submit your problem there so it gets into the right channels.

You're right, of course, but still, one customer quietly contacting Apple to have his computer repaired isn't on par with thousands of people expressing their frustration at having to pay for an already expensive computer to work properly...

There IS a hardware problem affecting recent Apple computers. It may come from a bad batch or a manufacturing problem, I don't know. But a simple look at the forum's list of topics will show that the problem is here alright. Ignoring it and simply censoring a few posts here and there is irresponsible, because the problem isn't going away. The customers, though, could start to think about leaving...

And for having tested it extensively, Windows Seven is one fine OS.

Add my name to the list, DVD-R goes in and makes noise for awhile and spits it out of my Macbook Pro. I'm very bummed about this, my computer is just a bit over a year old, $2000. On the intel Macbook the blank DVDs, go in fine!!!

    This is my drive:

Just wanted to keep the tally of users going....

Adding to the head count, I have the same problem - spin & spit for any type of disc. (Don't know how long it's been like it, haven't used the drive for a few months.)

Also in the last fornight - a spare battery popping open when not in the Mac and the power supply cable melting. Both Apple manufactured. Overall, not a good advert against putting OSX on non-Apple hardware in the future!

Yup, same issue here! I thought I had bought AppleCare, but found out I did not when I called for to send the MBP in for repairs.

Mine too! Not only does my internal drive ejects ALL discs so does my external Freecom drive!! My MAC is way past warranty, will a new drive fix the problem seeing as it is doing it on my internal and external I fear not. Only started happening yesterday after I tried and failed to burn a DL DVD.
    SO ANNOYING!

Your internal drive seems toast to me, but repairing permissions in safe mode could let you use your external drive again. Have you tried that?

I have tried repairing the permissions. But not in safe mode, how do I start my mac in safe mode please?

    So presumably its:

    Safe mode
    Repair permissions
    Restart Computer
    Connect External drive
    Fingers crossed

    Thanks!

Have already done this... It is funny that Apple monitors this forum (and edits what they don't like) but never once puts up "Please go to this web site address". Very poor customer service.

Add me on. Reads cds and dvds fine, but not empty ones. Spinn for a while and then spit out. Worked fine a before firmware update. Repair permissions doesnt help, neither did a hardware test.

I posted just recently with same problem. I used an aircan to blast inside my drive for a bit, and then my DVD-R disks were able to be read. I burned 3 DVDs in a row, and it is still recognizing the disks, even different brands.

I did not go to the store yet, but I had read that a possible dust or dirt problem is causing the problem in MacBook Pros, and that's what my problem seemed to be.

I will eventually go to the Apple Store and discuss this with them. Right now blank DVDs are being recognized.

I had similar problems with my drive - would read some CD/DVDs and not others etc.

Easy fix - just used one of those CD/DVD cleaners (the disks with small brushes on), after that every disk I tried worked perfectly!

So seems like the sensor just gets a bit dirty - the cleaning disks are only a few pounds (£3 on Amazon), so worth giving it a try!
