Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

My iPod quit working, that is to say it no longer made any sound. I could select playlists, songs, etc. and the countdown timer would run but there was no audio. I found that if I pushed with my thumbs on the lower corners - sort of as if I were text messaging, the sound came back, though often with great static. I posted a note about it here on the forums while searching and planing to just pay to have it repaired. Fortunately another forum member, who saw my post and was having the same problem found the information below and sent it to me.

My point though is that as a registered owner of the model iPod with an identified problem, Apple did nothing to make me aware of this and I could easily have spent $100 for a repair, or far more for a replacement unit, when I was entitled to a free replacement because of a defect. (I did follow these instructions and did receive a free replacement as did the gentleman who sent these instructions to me.)

Here's the info and source as it was sent to me......

As many people have seem to have reached dead ends after calling Customer Support (myself included!) I thought I would share the plan of attack that worked for me:

    1. Call the Customer Support for iPod number: 1-800-275-2273. I just kept hitting 0 so I didn't have to listen to the automated iPod diagnosing junk.

    2. Tell the first person you speak with that your iPod no longer has any sound. Explain that when you apply pressure to the lower right hand corner of the iPod the sound will return, but when pressure is released it goes away again. Tell them it is a manufacturing defect and that you would like to speak with a Representative who can refer your case to a Product Specialist. (If they tell you your product is no longer under warranty, let them know it does not matter in this case, and to please go ahead and transfer you).

    3. The Customer Care Representative. Tell them everything you told the first person. MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM ABOUT THE PRESSURE ON THE CORNER ISSUE! This is apparently key to them understanding/diagnosing the problem. If they say they have never heard of it being an issue, tell them it was only recently (within the past month or so) noted by Apple, and that the Product Specialist/Engineers should know exactly what the deal is.

    4. At this point, they should be telling you that they see it is in fact a problem, and that there is something that can be done! If they are still giving you the run-around, let them know it has definitely been noted by Apple and that you would like the matter to be handled properly! If you need to, ask them to refer you someone else, and to refer you to the Product Specialist regardless of whether or not they are informed on the issue.

    5. Hopefully by now you should have been either referred to the Product Specialists, or the Representative will have talked to them for you. The woman I spoke with just put me on hold for a few minutes while talking to them, and returned to tell me that I didn't even have to speak with them myself, and to just give her my address and E-Mail. She said someone would be contacting me shortly and that I should receive a new iPod within a week or so. She apologized for my treatment before and was very polite and helpful.

I found these instructions & testimonials at:

I ditto your thoughts... Have tried everything - to no avail. I am so disappointed in Apple. It now just comes down to squeezing the last penny from their customers... Wall Street vs. Main Street (gotta make those numbers - our stock and bonuses depend on it).

I tried the compressed air trick....and now the drive won't even accept discs to spit them out.

Now when I insert a disc, it gets about 4/5ths in, tries to accept it, then spits it out. I guess I must have jiggled something the wrong way.

Oh well. Just picked up and external drive at Best Buy for 55$.

I'm sorry...I was under the impression that we paid a premium for Mac products because they just work? But again, it seems to be another problem with my new MBP that I've found another thread on that contains hundreds of Mac users with identical problems.

I guess that's Apple's advertising at its finest. They got me to buy one thinking it was somehow better...in the end, it's turning out to be worse than my 6 year old PC.

    /rant

Add me to the list of those with the problem.

Too bad for coyotemoon, whose latest post was blown away by a salvo of "moderation". (Too late... I read it...) I agree with him, though. His post may have been deleted, but the rumor is rumbling louder and louder: in France, where I live (hey, nobody's perfect...), the press is starting to criticize Apple's lack of interest in iPods and iPhones having their screen cracking and even pelting the user's face with small pieces of glass.

I'm a Mac user and I'm proud of it, but I can't condone that kind of behavior. As a commercial venture, Apple has a duty toward its clients. It must make sure the products it sells are reliable and not dangerous.

We're not asking for much. R-E-S-P-E-C-T... Want me to sing it...?

More and more are adding their names to this list...

I would not have such a problem with this issue if it were in a desktop tower where it is easy (and less in cost) to swap out the DVD drive. But this is a Mac Book Pro Laptop which the DVD burner is very difficult to swap out. Maybe Apple is looking for addition income for all the repairs that are needed.

Reminds me off all the banks making a fortune off late fees, overdraft fees, and loan origination fees (53% of bank profits)...

Count me in as another success story! Yay!

Drive was getting picky as to what it would mount & burn errors beat successful messages. Drive was goin' south.

Stuffed in the nozzle of the compressed air and gave a good pass over everything. Then for good measure I took the vacuum cleaner to the port. Yeah the vacuum cleaner.
Worked like a charm & burning disc #10 as I write this.

So the simplest no tech fix ever & it saved me whatever the r&r might have cost - applecare died in june. Great discussion this solved my problem!

Same here, adding myself to the list. If there is a software or permission solution, that would be awesome, really do not feel like making an appointment with the kiddy desk and losing my work machine for a week, just so I can install snow leopard.

Comments to the contrary notwithstanding, I'm not convinced this is simply a bad batch of parts (after all, there are so many different optical drives and regional settings mentioned in this thread) we're dealing with here. I'm more and more convinced all our problems stem from some update that lowered the tolerance threshold for read and/or write errors on our optical drives, rendering them useless over a shorter or longer period of time, depending on the use made of the drive. Some power users may have experienced this problem early on and taken action, ie turned to AppleCare when they still could.

Average users probably never saw it coming, and found themselves at a loss when their drive suddenly stopped functioning altogether. That was my case: I didn't have to use my optical drive for several weeks, and when I had to, well, it was gone...

The same goes for iPhone screens shattering and iPods overheating: bad batch or bad design, it doesn't matter ; Apple is the manufacturer of record for these items, and should take responsability, no matter what. I was tempted to buy an iPhone, but now I don't know... The new Nokia N900 looks good...

Bottom line is, there are more and more people frustrated at their hardware not working as it should, and Apple isn't doing much to assuage their mounting dispair...

Same problem here. OK with CDs, spits out DVDs.

Hates them all: blanks, movies, install disks.

Tried resets (SMC, PRAM), permissions repair, holding upside down.

    Frustrating to say the least.

Turned on my MacBook Pro yesterday after not using the machine for a couple of months to discover I am unable to read any CD or DVD media at all. Neither pre-recorded commercial CD or DVDs will read, or CD-R or DVD-R or blank media.. Nothing! Nada! The MacBook Pro DVD Drive spins the discs and simply spits them out!

I've been scanning Google search and discovered thousands upon thousands of other users have experienced similar problems after undergoing an Apple Update and I too performed an Apple Update last night 29/08/09 which also included an Apple Security Update which seems to have caused this problem..

    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-867:

    Firmware Revision: HA13
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB

Hasn't anybody found a proper fix for this issue?

I've tried resets (SMC, PRAM), permissions repair, and tapping top of the MacBook pro casing when disc is inserted) but none of these have fixed or cured the problem so the problem persists - the MacBook Pro *MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-867* drive won't read any CD or DVD disc media - just spits the discs out!

So add me to the list..

Would love to find a fix for this annoying issue..

I have now tried all of these with no success as well:
Resets (SMC, PRAM), permissions repair, and tapping top of the MacBook pro casing when disc is inserted)
