Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

I do not think a new thread is necessary... I think what you are seeing is that Apple customers are just now using their superdrive and finding it no longer reads DVD's. If each poster can supply information with what type of DVD's (SL, Movies, burned SL or DL discs) they have problems with I that would give a more complete picture.

I am still disappointed and perplexed that Apple has yet to chime in on this issue. I am now souring on the Apple brand and my next laptop WILL NOT be a Mac.

Also, I would like to say I had hoped that upgrading to SL would correct the super(suck)drive issue but it did not.

Bought my copy of SL yesterday and to my dismay, same thing happened.. it cant be read on my mid 2007 MBP (w/o Applecare).. and apparently all other DVDs (Tiger, Leopard and movie DVDs) are having the same problem as well .. CDs can be read, but cant be written..

At first, thought it was a dud disc issue, but i did get in installed on my iMac without any problems...

Trawled the net for info and did most of the DIY fixes, but to no avail .. not sure how it should be classified as the SD is being selective on the disc it's reading..

Yep, same problem for me. My superdrive had problems reading DVDs before. But for some reason it would not mount when Snow Leopard wanted to use it as a start up disk. It took me 9 attempts to make it work.
You could use Remote Disk as a start up but Apple would not allow it if you have a superdrive

I contacted Apple and they are sending out a new install disc.

"We have escalated your request to our respective department to process the replacement disk for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Up-To-Date"

Contacted Apple. For them, the problem is mine. As the guarantee period (1 year) has expired, if I want to substitute the broken DVD-drive I have to pay (more or less Euro 350).
Very funny...for a MacBook that is almost 1 and 1/2 years old...

I doubt it will work - sounds like you have the same Superdrive problem as the rest of us - Drive won't mount any DVD! Only option is to try a new Superdrive - hopefully under warranty.

As a side note, here in the EC, European law states that a minimum 2 year warranty must be provided - although this has not yet been adopted by all member states - including the UK - but it will be, soon! In the meantime, we can user the UK Sale of Goods Act and claim the item is 'not fit for purpose'.

I have burned DVDs very often in my MBP's year and a half lifetime. Upon upgrading to SL, it will not recognize 4 different brands of DVDs with 4 different burning programs (including the Finder burn folder from APPLE). What happened?

What could the reasoning be for this? I don't see any reason this would happen except a move to a 64-bit kernel. This drive is on an ATA/PATA connection, while everything new has been on a SATA connection. Could this have something to do with it? All Intel macs have a SATA hard drive connection, so maybe Apple just forgot about our disk drives?

Adding myself to the list. I don't use the drive often, but I'm fairly sure it started happening within the last few months.

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
May I join you in this endless discussion? Because... you won't believe it and even I won't believe it...
Here we go again. After so many years of using Mac I'm realy at a point of asking myself if I'm masochistic. So many Powerbooks, so many problems and almost none of them without troubles and problems. No warrenties because "just over a year"...

Now after some major problems with former G3's G4's and a G5 ( sorry sir, no more warrenty after 15 months) I have this problem with the Mac Pro as discribed here on the forum. And yes, you are right, like most of you... just over a year old! Actualy... the Mac does not even see the DVD and after trying many times it even did stall and had to restart it the hard way.

I hope that the arrogance of Mr.Mac changes from being small Apple in to Big Apple and admits that they have made a mistake in this case and grant the people who are, without any reason aperently,so loyal to the brand, a reasonable service.
Mistakes are there to be solved and settled so why not, Mr. Big Apple, give were the right to: Our service and a guaranty that things keep working!

After dealing with this problem for about 2 months, I took my year old MacBook Pro to the Genius Bar, and the CD-Rom Drive has to be replaced. It will cost 396.00 plus tax,and I am livid. There is no good reason that this should be happening on a computer costing this much, after only 1year and a few months. Luckily, I purchased the computer in 2008 on my American Express, and they have an additional 1 year warranty on purchases made. They will pay the $, and I am going to write to the corporate off ice and I am going to voice my unhappiness with this product. I am very surprised to see so many complaints about this matter on this forum.

I just bought snow leopard to come home and find out that my drive won't read the disc.

I am one of the others who have only used their drive a hand full of times.

After some further research I am able to read and burn cd's. I can read single layer dvd's fine, but if I insert a dual layer dvd, I can not read or burn them. Like the others it just spins up for 10 - 20 seconds then ejects the disc.

Since this problem is so wide spread, I really feel like this ought to be repaired by apple regardless of the state of a person's warranty status. This should be a recall. And its not a new problem either. After a very straight forward google search, this problem has been going on since 2007.
