Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

The drive is 3 years old. But never had one problem with it. At all.

One day, I put a DVD in it and it just would not load anything to the disk. It took me an hour to get the disc out, and just has not worked since. Hopefully, each incident will be taken seriously. I am looking forward to this investigation. I want Snow Leopard.

I'm sending Steve Jobs an email, seriously. This is such a shame.

I had the same problem too with my recently purchased Mid-June Unibody MacBook Pro. This laptop has been a stinker right from the get-to. Three days after getting it, the HD died, requiring me to give it up for 5 days while they waited for a new drive to come in. After that, it had the well documented problem with the Seagate 7200 RPM HD sudden motion sensor causing freezes and strange noises. Now, when I tried to upgrade to Snow Leopard I found that my SuperDrive was SuperDead. Like others have described here it would eject the disks. It was a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E Firmware ZA0E. It was replaced with a Matshita UJ-868 (Rev: KB19).

My Late 2007 MBP also had a SuperDrive that went belly up with the same problem about 6 months ago. It was an isolated incident, so I didn't think much of it. It was a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N. It was replaced with the same drive. It has functioned fine for 6 months now.

I'm having the same problem. But it's not related to Snow Leopard install. I happened to notice it a couple of weeks ago when going to burn a DVD. I just rarely do that and have been having minimal problems with CD burning. But DVD+r will not mount but Toast will tr to burn but always ends in a 404-403 (?) error. And DVD-R just get ejected.

But my 10.5 Leopard DVD would mount and I could use it. So I thought I'd install Snow Leopard and then try to work on the SuperDrive later. Well it also is now being ejected. Not sure what to do.

I have an Imac and my superdrive, when used (rarely) made a lot of noise or didn't read disk period. Took it into the Apple store and they replaced it no questions asked. Took a couple of weeks but have had no issues with the replacement. Had nothing to do with Snow leopard, don't have it.

If in doubt take it in. I think this is a known issue, they just aren't making it public.
