Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

I too am experiencing the same issue with my SuperDrive after installing Snow Leopard. I have a 15" MacBook Pro (original), with the SuperDrive MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E.

After installing Snow Leopard, the SuperDrive only recognizes CD-R or DVD-R sometimes. But even when it does recognize the blank media, it does not burn. I could put data on it and hit "burn," but it would just run forever until it finally gives me an error message that the disc cannot be burned. However, it still recognizes movie DVD and plays without any problem.

    Hi,

I have the same problem that occurs since I bought my MacBook Pro, no matter what OS X version is installed :

MBP Santa Rosa 2.4Ghz 4 GB RAM with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E

I have not been able to burn discs for a while and lately I realized that the drive would not read CD's and DVD rom's either.
I also hope Apple acknowledges the issue and replaces the drive for free !

    I have a MacBookPro2,2, 15 inch, with a superdrive of HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA.

My drive also ejects media whenever inserted, even though I know the media is valid, having checked out on our iMac. Until the OS upgrade, I have had no need to use the laptop DVD drive for some time. Is optical drive failure to be expected after a certain amount of time (natural old age) or is it expected to function like the rest of the computer for its whole lifetime?

Same problem here; since I bought my MBP end of Oct 2007 there have been problems (of the same nature as the ones described in this thread) with the internal HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N drive. Discs will not mount, burning of discs will sometimes work, sometimes not.

    +1

    same here.

The MATSHITA DVD-R-UJ-857E of my iMac still reads media and burns CDs but does not burn DVDs anymore.

My Superdrive has gone as well. I've tried everything, it just spits all discs out. The problem started about six months ago. I am really ticked off as i've been going about preaching about apple to all my friends!

Same here. Actually the drive has never worked properly, I now realise. I always thought it was because of the DVD brand I used. Not all brands work in all drives, I have been told. (Hm..! Maybe I was a bit naive.)
Many of the ones I had burned on my previous computer never mounted +right from the start+ so on my brand new MBP.

Last week I could not play a DVD I had just burned myself. In another iMac it just played fine!

It could partly and temporarily be 'fixed' by using a Lens Cleaner DVD - which is kinda strange, for which brand new DVD drive needs lens cleaning?! And the problem came back anyhow.

    MBP 2,4 sept 5th 2008
The serial of the drive is (again!) HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N

I have Applecare – oof –, but Apple shoud take this up with all of them. This is no good. Just far too many people reporting this same issue.

I realized that when I put in CDs, the Superdrive reads them - be it blank or not. When I put in DVDs (empty or not and regardless of what brand [Imation, SONY, etc.] ), it JUST WON'T LOAD THEM! I've tried this all the time and still nothing happens.

I have the Late 2007 low-end 15" MacBook Pro and I'm facing this problem.
