Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Hey guys, I just fount solution.
All of you who have this problem probably use VMWare Fusion. I didn't read all of the pages from this thread, but by reading page 7 or so I found mention of vmware fusion and I got an idea that this is the problem. I just tried to boot my win xp under vmware and my drive starts working... fantastic!!! So I decided to completely remove VMWare, then rebooted my mac and.... it works!

That's why superdrive works just for sometimes for some of you — it works when your vmware guest os is running. So, it's up to you to decide to completely uninstall vmware fusion (There is uninstaller inside the dmg, and do not forgot to reboot after that) or try to play with settings.

I run VM Fusion. I would love to know how many of us with this problem also run Fusion! Oh, the irony if all this Apple bashing comes down to a PC virtualization implementation issue...:)

I've never installed VMWare Fusion, so that can't be the source of the problem for my MBP.

I've reported a malfunctioning SuperDrive earlier in this thread and I have VMWare installed.

I ran the VMWare 2.0.5 uninstaller.
    Rebooted.
Tried SL and a DVD movie.
The SuperDrive still does NOT work!
(ran the uninstaller a second time and rebooted but no luck)

Then I booted Windows XP in BootCamp.
    Inserted the same DVDs.
XP spits them out just like OS X.

Booted Snow Leopard from an external drive.
    Still no luck.

Reinstalled VMWare. Booted up XP. Tried the DVDs. No luck.

Man I wish this would have been the solution,

just uninstalled fusion, deleted virtual machines left after install, deleted all preferences files from both user & system library. emptied trash. rebooted. inserted DVD+R DL. disc recognized. mounted on desktop. added test files. started burn @ 2.4x.& at 41% got an error : The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022). so i guess fusion is not the culprit.

Those with the problem should list 3rd party things they have installed. Not apps, but things the run in the background, menubar items, login items, plug-ins.

Also, try burning and reading discs with no apps open.

One quick thing to try is to boot into Safe Mode (holding Shift for a while when it boots) and trying to get a few discs to mount.

Great - so they've noticed, but for God's sake will someone tell AppleInsider this is NOT a Snow Leopard issue. The huge increase in posts here suggests many, many users are only now finding they have a failed drive when they try to install SL, but it is NOT the install that is causing the problem. This thread has been ongoing long before Snow Leopard was even a baby cub!

Apple cannot wipe this away as a SL problem - my drive quit months ago - the second one to crap out on my MBP bought April 07. I have not and will not upgrade to SL until some fix comes along for my drive.

add me to the list. going to apple in the morning to have it replaced.

you woul think apple would show some initiative and proactively offer a solution. its a shame how much apple has changed over the years.

    I have a 2 GHz core 2 duo imac with a
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A superdrive

    Firmware Revision: Q624

Other than loading some software when I first got the machine, the drive had never been used. 2 months ago I tried to burn a DVD with some jpegs. When that did not work, I tried to burn a CD without success. It does not even read. So no, I have not installed Snow Leopard yet.

I really need a DVD burner right now to backup my projects. I was looking at getting an external USB DVD burner but saw this USB Blu-ray burner and thought I should get it to future proof my purchase, http://www.digistor.com/Digistor-External-Blu-ray-Burner-USB-2-0-Slot-Load
