Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Hey everyone - having the same problem here that is stopping my install of Snow Leopard. Sometimes mounts the disk and gets through the first part of the install - then when trying to access the disk to complete the install just fails.

    Driving me nuts!

    Hi, there!

I have problems, too, with the SuperDrive (type: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E) in my MacBook. Only, it's slightly different:

I bought my MacBook in January 2008 and after one year of use (right after my garantee was expired!), my SuperDrive started having issues ejecting my dvd/cd's. It takes several pushes on the Eject-key to get the disk ejected, if it ever happens.

I am not used to that Mac-hardware is showing faulty behaviour only after one year of use. Before, I owned an iBook G4 and I never ever had any hardware issues. Beautiful machine! I am pretty disappointed about the quality of the drive in my current MacBook.

    Many thank!

Same exact problem but so much worse. I was attempting to partition my hard drive for a bootcamp partition but in doing so frioed my harddrive. Then I thought "no biggie, i'll just restore from time machine using the startup dvd." Wrong!! Thats when I realized that the startup DVD or any disc did this. Someone save me!!!

Same deal here. Drive will not recognize media I'm trying to use to reinstall Leopard after a hard drive failure. Two-for-two.

My problem was the drive stopped writing. It seemed to start but never wrote anything. No DVD's, no CD's, not with Apple's built in software nor with Toast. Had to take it in and get it serviced at my local Apple Store. They had it for about a week and a half.

I have the same problem. I have a 3.5 year old 12" Powerbook G4. The Apple Care just ran out in April and in July my SuperDrive stopped accepting dvds/cds. I can force one in during startup or when waking from sleep, but it always just spits it back out without ever even recoginzing the disc. I have searched the net for dozens of hours, trying many different "fixit" techniques .. to no avail. It seems that this truly is a related issue and that Apple should do something.

I'd be happy with a simple voucher for a new SuperDrive. The computer itself is in pristine condition, but the Apple Care is out. But then again, does Apple really care? =(

I have the same problem with CDs ONLY. DVDs work fine without a problem. Any CD I put in spins and clicks for about 20-30 seconds, and is automatically ejected. This is a MBP Unibody Early 2009, 2.4GHz.

    No Snow Leopard. No VMWare.

Tried starting in safe mode. Same problem.

    Where do I sign?

So there I was stuck in Cuba when the screen decided to shut off two full length pixel lines across it. Every time i had to work on it and see the dead pixels it was like a nagging taste bud... you try to ignore it but you just keep tonguing it... Anyway, after two months of that I was able to get it repaired, only to get it back with the optical drive actually putting scratches into my disc. Anyone else experience this?

it happened when installing Rosetta, after a few spins and clicks, and grinding, it spits it out with a distinct ring scratch about a 1/4 of an inch from the beginning of the disc. Tried another disc from the set, and it did the same thing, but this time i stopped it to find scratches in the same location- Thought it was no problem, and the techs were rough or carless when fixing the screen. Took it in to get repaired- and just got it back today to discover that the replacement drive they put in, does the same thing. wt..f?

Tried every sort of (25 discs) media, with a 75% eject rate. For spending ~2500.00 on a notebook, this is not cool.

In case anyone is keeping score:
The old one was a UJ-857

    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

I have successfully installed the Rosetta on 3 other computers, but the pro has been the black sheep. Apple should consider all the word-of-mouth that we do for them, (I got my whole family to switch) and how bad it looks when you pull out your sleek 2500.00 book and they say cool... and the you hook up an 55.00 external drive just to read a cd. Those smirks and laughs are at you... not with you.

By the way, I'm taking it back tomorrow to get fixed again. Its running considerably hotter then I ever remember, and the only thing I have open is Safari.

    Yippee.

    Hello,

I have a similar problem here: My MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E does read anything, but has big problems with writing: DVD+Rs are written only with 2,4x Speed MAX (most of the time 1,5x Avg) and CD-Rs are ejected every single time. Its not possible for me to burn any CD-R. I don't think, that it's a Snow Leopard Problem, because it was the same with Leopard. It must by any Hardware-Issue, because in Windows it's the same (I have BootCamp on my MacBookPro).

I just had an authorized Apple Repair facility replace my drive with an identical model HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:

    Model: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N
    Revision: AP09
    Serial Number: K0076F14628
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    Low Power Polling: Yes
    Power Off: Yes

I still have some problems... maybe these drives are too sensitive to imperfections in optical discs?

    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
    SMC Version (system): 1.16f11
    Serial Number (system): System Serial#

    Here are the performance issues:

    CD (music): **reads/launches iTunes**
CD (Windows XP install disc): *reads*
CD (Apple app program file): **reads/launches Finder**
CD-R (burned Ubuntu Linux install disc): *reads*
    CD-R (burned music): **reads/launches iTunes**
    CD-R (burned data): *reads*
CD-R (blank): *loads* (did not attempt to burn)
CD-RW (blank): *loads* (did not attempt to burn)
    DVD (Region 2 movie): *plays*
    DVD (Leopard Install Disc): *reads/launches*

DVD-R (burned data): %%ejects without loading into Finder (ejected 3 out of 3 SONY® discs that work on another MBP and 1 out of 1 Traxdata® discs that worked on another MBP)%%
DVD+R (burned data): %%reads sometimes (1 out of 3 SONY® discs that worked on another MBP)%%
DVD-R (blank): %%ejects without loading into Finder (5 out of 5 Traxdata® discs that work on another MBP)%%

    DVD+R (blank): UNTESTED
    DVD-RW: UNTESTED

I know some would conclude that the reason must be faulty/cheap disc. However, the discs work on my girlfriend´s earlier Core2Duo 2.1GHz MacBookPro model. The discs were burned on her computer and can be read on her computer and my parent´s iMac. It is only my MBP that is incapable of using the media. Also, regarding the possible suspicion that I should clean my Superdrive lens... THE DRIVE WAS INSTALLED NEW TODAY!!!

As far as i have read the posts i have noticed the following things:

    - Problems occurs with different kind of superdrives
    - The current Mac users don't often use their superdrive, but the moment they really use it, it seems to bug
    - Problem occurs independently of the OS: it happens under Leopard and Snow Leopard, not tested yet with Tiger?
    - The problems still remains after having changed the logic board of the computer.

    My guess:
    - A problem in the ROM/Driver for the superdrive
    - A problem in the EFI or logic board communication center
    - A bug in the OS not likely because this problem also occurs before the OS has been started
