Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

I haven't read every post in this thread, and I doubt apple reads these post, thought I'd offer the macbook pro feedback link-

If you haven't done so already, send your optical drive problem feedback. The more complaints they get will raise an issue flag and then maybe they allocate some (more) manpower to solving it for us.

My Superdrive also gave up accepting DVD's and CD's (both, comercial and own-burned). -> imediately last sunday afternoon (4/10/2009) after installing Snow Leopard (Retail from Apple Store) on my MacBook Pro 17" Intel (Original).

Thats why I've posted the details in the Software/10.6 section of this forum:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2190496&tstart=0

I recommend, that u guys, that have this problem related to the date, when u installed Snowleopard (or 10.5.x) on u'r machines, also should post it there, because it needs to be separated from the simple hardware-specific failures!

I did wether use Bootcamp, nor VM-Ware and I did not have 10.5.x in between, wether solved one of all the tipps and suggestions here or in google the failure of my drive. My last working system was 10.4.11.

    Cheers,

    Tazmandevil

This has been happening to me as well. I've only recently started using iTunes to rip audio cd's. It spits the disc out after a few seconds. Repairing disk permissions helped for a while but not any more. The drive won't read audio cd's but works with DVD's.

Add mine to the list of failures.

I had no idea what the problem was until a friend recently ran into it as well with his mini.
There could not have been a more watertight case of it being caused by an update: he literally finished watching a dvd, installed a security update (update had not been run in some time) and when inserting the next dvd, it refused to read it.

In my case, my DVD drive is infrequently used - so I cant correlate it with any particular update. When I went to install iLife 09 earlier in the year, I had the symptoms described here. I blamed the disc at the time - it eventually mounted.
Now when I tried to install snow leopard, I discovered again it would not mount the disc. Or any disc.

I have had another failure with my previous MBP in 2007 - a superdrive firmware update failed and left the dvd drive bricked. Even though my mbp was a couple of months out of warranty, Apple replaced it for free.

Im off to the store on the weekend - will advise how things go...

The drive actually worked well installing Snow Leopard and worked well after until last week. Half the time it doesn't read disks and ejects them. The other half it reads but really slow. Also it thinks a disk is in the drive so when I boot up it is stuck at a blank gray screen for about 10min before booting OSX. Pretty much the computer is useless as I need it in class and work. I even had to buy a new ThinkPad T400. So far I have fixed my Mac over 10 times until the 1 year warranty went out, now its just falling apart. This is the only computer I have ever sent to repair and a disgrace for $1500.

Add me to the list. I bought my MBP in December 2006. I have the:

    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA

Apple has lost all my future sales. I will be buying the cheap Dells for now on. This problem has been going on for over a year and all Apple can do is make commercials like, "I'm a Mac, I am awesome ... yeah, like 2 years ago before the secret got out and your products started to suck."

I got my sister and mother to get an Apple and feel horrible about it. This was before my drive stopped reading data discs. I have had 3 Dells and 1 Mac. On the 3 Dells I had NO problems. And they were all half the price of my Mac. Why buy a Mac for over $1000 when you can get a Dell for 1/3rd the coast with Ubuntu on it that will probably last you a year less, but will save your pocketbook?

Oh well. It's really sad. Like discovering your girlfriend of 10 years has been cheating on you.

My drive won't read data CDs or DVDs. It doesn't pop them out. It just says the device can't be read. So now all these CDs with photos from my wedding can't be put on my computer. I know I can buy an external Optical Drive for like $60, but that is so cumbersome for a laptop.

You just lost many many sales, Apple. I hope you're happy that you couldn't figure out what is wrong now that the problem has been going on for YEARS!!

can anybody please help me or guide me? you see what I'm working off of. It's been a little over two years since I got my mbp. the other day dvd's weren't burning I was getting the "failed to calibrate...." error. I tried to clean the drive with a philips dvd cleaner, and compressed air. After doing this my drive would spin a couple times and then quit.... I couldn't eject the cd or dvd. Holding the eject button didn't work... holding the mouse at restart would make noise but still no luck. Use the drutility function and it ejected. the only problem is that now I hear the drive attempt to read anything put in and it doesn't work... no luck whatsoever. Can anybody please help me with this?

Has anyone replaced their drive after having this problem and still had the problem? If so, then it must be software, right? So, how about it, anybody with a new drive and the same old problem? Or did replacement take care of it?

Ive done all the cleaning and zapping and still can't use my drive. I'm probably going to replace it, but first I would like to know if that will work.

I got my HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N rev.AP09 replaced with an identical drive 2 weeks ago as described in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10350482#10350482 .
Still no reading or writing of DVD-R (just rejects the disc after 20 seconds), but DVD+R has a 70% success rate for reads now... from the same disc - up from 0%. Haven´t tried writes on DVD+R. All discs rejected my my Macbook are accepted and read/written by my girlfriend´s macbook pro, so it is not "faulty disc" that is the problem.

Will try getting the drive replaced again when I feel like surrendering my MacBook Pro for yet another 2-3 weeks!

I had my drive replaced under AppleCare and the problem was fixed. No changes in software whatsoever. Prior to the replacement my drive would not read DVDs or CDs. At first, if I tried repeatedly, sometimes I could get the disc to mount, but after a while it stopped working entirely. At least in my case, it was definitely a hardware issue (I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N).

Keeps on getting bigger and bigger...

On my third drive- the second didnt sound/ work right as soon as I got it home. I took it back and got one that works. If you guys are going to the geniuses I recommend that you go early in the morning and sit down while they "troubleshoot" May sound funny but it shows to them that you are not there to just drop it off and run. I know it gets logged into the apple tech database when you go into the genius bar to have it serviced, but you can also send in YOUR own feedback-

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

Apple doesnt read these so put your feedback where they do-
