Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Count me on this crazy issue:

Being loyal to apple for so many years, and have so many apple items, and this time I am really unhappy.
Went to apple store, they asked for replacing the optical drive, and suggest to contact applecare.

Called apple care, they said they do not think the superdrive 2.1 can kill the hard drive, even if it is they won't replace as my lap as it's out of warranty. If you are under warranty you are lucky....I just didn't use the dvd burner almost....until I need to use the installation dvd to repair the system.

    Here it is:

This is really frustrating. I have own this macpro for barely a whole month and when trying to install adobe creative suite I got this problem. I inserted cd one and picked the components to be installed it went well and then prompted for cd two. I inserted cd two but it just got spitted. I swear they are brand new shiny cds! I then tried other cds including win office which i successfully installed a couple of weeks ago but no avail. I'm planning to wait for some days before rushing to get it replaced, coz if it's a hardware and sl compatibility problem i will end up getting it replaced again and again.

I to lost my DVD drive when I attempted to install the Snow Leopard disk. My drive will not accept the disk. I am able to use most third drive disks but not any apple disks including the install disk for Ilife 2009. I have had to have my DVD drive repaired twice and now it looks like I will have to go for the third time.

We have the same problem. Ordered the Snow Leopard DVD. Didn't work.
Tried other DVD's; they don't work.

Strange enough a audio-CD doew work fine.

We called apple support, they advised us to bring the laptop in for repair. To my opinion, the drive should be abble to work fine.

At this moment we are stuck. Apple??

    Can anyone help us?

Since my previous DVD drive got stuck and I had to replace it I hav ethe same problem like everyone else. When I put i an DVD it won't read (with exception of my tiger OSX Dvd and some CD-R's). The DVD spins for some time and ejects after then after a while. I have this mostly with DVD's and not CD's...
All the media works fine on other pc's etc.

I have already replaced my previous Superdrive with the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857

Ok, clearly this isnt a stand alone issue...
I work at an Apple Authorised Reseller, and we have multiple Mac's with the same problems, also the drives mentioned in previous posts!
Right now i have the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875.
We never got any notice from Apple about this issue....

All i can say, this isnt our first customer with this problem, there are at least a dozen!!!

Add me to the list of *** up apple consumers. I can't believe that Apple is not coming up with a solution for this problem. It has been long time and I am sure they lost many customers because of this. My superdrive's model is as you may guess:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N

Keep up the laid back attitude apple!!! When you realize your mistake it may have been too late.

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading CD/DVD media. It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects the CD/DVD out. The same media works fine in my corporate HP Pavilion dv7 laptop.

Same boat, upgraded to snow leapord, now my superdrive on my mbp 15 2.16 is not as friendly as it once was...spits out certain discs and acting like all your prior reports, took it in apple, met with a so called mac genius, right of the bat told me not to believe this forum, said you guys perpetuate lies..i told them that is horse crap and check my machine, also its out of warranty yet they still supposedly re installed snow lep again and still no dice...I spoke to the manager and we tried booting regualr leopard and still no dice, quirky drive, he told me that snow leopard is so advanced that it will really point out if a drive is failing and he suggested replacing...i told him who should i do that since it worked just fine before the upgrade, told him again not the only one with this issue, he still stood by his word about snow leopard is pointing an exploit in failing optical drives and i told him that was somewhat fishy, where is the disclaimer, if i knew that I would not of bought and upgrade. something just doesnt smell right here....class action maybe? shall i contact our boy king stevo?
