Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Is it possible to run MAC OS Installation DVD from a DVD recorder?
My Mac also stopped reading discs.
Got a Sony DVD recorder. What if I can not only burn but play too? Can old DVD recorders run discs? At least, the installation disc that was delivered together with my MacBook?
I can't check it so far. It is several yrs old. It doesn't seem to work either with Mac OS or MacBooks. I don't see where to plug in the cords of the recorder in my Mac. Maybe I can make it work if I pay special cords? I'd also agree to install Windows specially to marry the Mac and the recorder. Sony support didn't answer. Googling anythin' relevant failed.

I discovered my Matshita SuperDrive wasn't detecting blank CDs/DVDs just a week before my AppleCare expired. I'm surprised it failed as I only use it occasionally (though I do really need it on those occasions). Fortunately, it's been replaced free of charge and I now have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N Rev AP09. I was pleased about the change of manufacturer until I read this thread. Fingers crossed, as I'll now have to pay for any further replacements...

    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:

    Firmware Revision: FAV1
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media:
    Type: CD-RW
    Blank: Yes
    Erasable: Yes
    Overwritable: Yes
    Appendable: Yes
    Write Speeds: 4x

The drive won't burn audio CD's. It won't read data CD's. It won't read standard OS X files that were backed-up on CD, or DVD.

Why would Apple actually want to let you read/write your own media? In all their new devices there is no way to do that. You have to consume what they sell.

I also had issues after the first year the warranty expired. This is an Intel iMac from 2008, MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857/Revision: DB09. Now no DVD+ or DVD-, -/+RW, will work. They just get ejected most of the time. The rare times it attempts to write, it fails, ejects the disc, and even scratches the surface of any disc, including original movie DVDs! I don't know what it will take to get a recall on these drives and have free replacements.

Is there a reason you omitted the closing statement on my post?

Apple products are not cheap, and are supposed to be of better quality, not become faulty within just two years. An Apple Senior Advisor did inform me that if a significant amount of users with this same problem call AppleCare at 1-800-275-2273, and request to report to their Engineering Department that hey have a faulty Optical Drive that just stopped burning, reading, or loading DVDs, that they will probably create a recall program to take care of it even if out of warranty, maybe even reimburse those who have had to get their drives replaced or purchase an external burner. But it must be a significant amount of calls and complaints.

Please, they don't really read these forums much, but the phone calls do get documented, that's what will work. So please, spread the word in all of these forums, and get those calls with this issue in to AppleCare.

Although that cleaning solution may have worked for a few people, for the majority of us it has not. I have tried that already to no avail. I have a few other similar posts as this issue dates back some time. And before anymore suggest to try different brands of discs, please don't. I have experimented with different high quality brand name media. All works fine on another iMac computer, so media is not an issue. Rolled back to an earlier version of Leopard, compressed air, firmware revisions, etc. These Matshita drives are for the most part faulty for the last four years from my investigations.

Maybe for SOME people the $10 cleaning kit works -- indeed, it worked for me but for only a FEW DISCS -- but I'm sure a great many of us have tried everything.

I even went so far as to remove the Superdrive from my MacBook and try actually inspecting the lenses that way as suggested by posts from the past. I followed the instructions on iFixIt.com....and it did nothing to improve it. I'm convinced the burning mechanism in my Superdrive is shot. For a while I could only burn music CDs and video DVDs -- my Superdrive wouldn't burn data discs. Now it won't burn ANYTHING. And no, it's not Snow Leopard or any patches or upgrades, as it doesn't work in Linux, either. However, slap on a DVD combo burner I took out of my PC, and THAT drive burns like a champ.

Wondering if I should just remove my Superdrive and not replace it...it'd make the machine a few ounces lighter, and that's more space for air to circulate...

I agree with this post, people need to call in to report the issue even if it is no longer covered to be repaired. Apple does need to respond, imagine that only a portion of the people with the problem are probably using this forum to report it.

If it a dirty drive, faulty eye or software update that has caused the issue Apple is replacing drives under warranty and should be looking into the reasons for it and consider this may be a chronic problem for them in general.

Clearly posting here has not even caused Apple to even post a bulletin on the issue effecting quite a few people. I bought an external drive before I got the cleaning CD idea to work, some people are paying to replace the drive, all this should be addressed by Apple if it is happening to more then a few people.

My MacBook Pro's, superdrive doesn't work again.
I have inserted Music CD after cleaning it with a credit card and iPhone cleaning cloth, and it worked. Then I inserted burned DVD and it got in, but I couldn't get it out. While pressing ejecting button nothing happened. I got a DVD cleaning kit, inserted it, now it is stuck in the drive and I can't get it out. When I press eject button nothing happens, I don't even see the Eject sign on the screen.
    What might it be?

here the same problem. i think i do not have to repeat it , as i would be the x-hundredth to report it..

i am watching this forum now for over half a year and fantastically all the time it hasn´t grown bigger than 52 sites, although this was the amount it had, when i started watching it.. in the meantime it went down to 50 sites for some time... so like it seems, entries got deleted while other entries stay. while the amount of entries with senseless ideas like buying some iphone accessoires, etc. in order to clean the drive are growing, it seems for me that entries about the topic itsself are shrinking.. Needless to say, that till now no official statement of apple´s side has been released.

in one word : Poor !!

Especially , as it seems , that it s just a firmware problem caused through a sec-update (1-2009 - when i remember exactly..) and no real hardware problem . or why does my superdrive still read & burn CDs correctly, but DVDs not ? ( even not read..)

not hoping anymore that Apple will change its mentality, but at least leaving them a message:
if there isn ´t any change in mentality about customer support i think my money is spent better with a D..ll & Ubuntu.

sorry for my bad english ( it s not my native language..)

Going to have to toss my hat into this sad ring. SuperDrive suddenly does not accept any DVDs or CDs. Both insert properly, but then there is an unfamiliar humming noise. The disk spins and then makes a loud buzzing noise, and 20-30 seconds later the disc is spit out.

Computer is a late 2009 MBP, 3.06 model. Drive is MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868. Latest version of OS X.

This is likely a hardware problem, as the computer does not accept disks when booted into Windows 7.

One month out of warranty, too. Hoping a recall is initiated.
