Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

I am having the same problem with the superdrive ejecting disks, all disks.

However, an external LaCie firewire drive works just fine.

    Same problem here.

I noticed it started a few months ago not recognizing any CD/DVD that came from a PC environment. I thought it was something related with the format/compatibility.

Now it wont read any CD/DVD, not even Apple's originals.

So I'm subscribing to this long list, hoping someone will come up with a solution.

Happy New Year for you all!

Add me to this list. My MBP started burning CDs poorly about a year and a half ago, and about six months ago the sporadic burn function ceased all together. I still never had problems with DVDs or CDs until tonight, when it has decided to stop loading DVDs. I have not checked CDs yet.

My first Mac was an iMac G4. I never had problems with it, and it still sits on my desk as an art piece. I then got a 3rd gen iPod, which lasted me almost 5 years and would still work fine if the battery wasn't shot.

Since then, I've gone through four iPod touches, one of which had a headphone jack failure several months out of Apple Care and functioned beautifully otherwise. Apple said it would cost $200 to fix because the unit would need to be replaced. My current MBP has had a logic board replacement (under warranty) and now this.

I don't like where Apple seems to be heading. I'm due for a new laptop this year, and I think I'll be going with another MBP. But if it leaves another bad taste in my mouth, I might start shopping around.

I am also having this problem. Previously, using a lens cleaner did the trick. But starting yesterday, the drive no longer reads the lens cleaner. When I put anything into it, it makes a clicking noise as the drive is trying to read the disc, then spits it out. I have a MacBook Pro from early 2007. The drive is listed as HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA. I would really like to replace this with another internal drive...does anyone know of a model that is would work as a replacement, and doesn't share the same problems?

I hardly ever use my "SuperDrive" (MacBook Pro Early 2008). During the warranty period I had it replaced by Apple because it stopped working. I was able to install some software after that and haven't really used it since. Fast forward to Christmas 2010 when I tried to play my new CD and DVDs. The "SuperDrive" doesn't work AGAIN. I bought my wife a $500 (The price of two replacement "SuperDrives") Compaq Presario laptop. It runs Windows Vista and plays both the DVD and CD without any trouble. I've used personal computers since 1981 (Apple II in school and Macintosh) and owned PCs since 1988. There are 10 computers of different kinds in my house running three different OSs and only this one Mac. Of all the computers I've owned EVER the Mac is the only one that has had a serious design flaw like this.

Fron here on let's all rename the "SuperDrive" the SuckyDrive. It's a more fitting title and reflects the quality they exhibit.

    Can anyone say Class Action.

33 pages of reports. Maybe Apple has serial problem here with the Matsushita drives.

33 pages?! By my count it's 55 pages, 816 entries. And that's just on this forum.

Soon, I'll be dragging my Mac into the Apple Store...AGAIN. I'll be interested to see what they tell me regarding my second failed SuckyDrive. Incidentally, my iPhone just crapped out (no complaints there, it lasted more than long enough without one problem). So I'm possibly in the market for two products. We'll see how they handle this. I can easily switch to an HP laptop and a Crackberry.

I have a 17-inch MBP purchased in August of 2007. I'm on my second optical drive (Matshita UJ-85J and now it's not working. It's like someone threw a switch. Worked fine one day. Didn't work at all the next. My three-year warranty expired four months ago.

    Disappointing.

So I've tried some basic tests and learned a few things, you all might do the same...

    • I rebooted within my Bootcamp version of Windows, and the drive still ejects media

    • I tried logging into another user account, and the drive still ejects media

    • However, I've now discovered that it doesn't eject CD media, just DVD's.

*Anyone know the reasoning to that last one?*

I've been having the same problems. I called technical support and they instructed me to do the following:

    1. Shut down computer
    2. Hold OPTION + COMMAND + R keys
    3. While holding the above keys, turn the power on and immediately hold down the P key as well. The CD/DVD player will sound as if it is ejecting a CD
    4. After the computer has chimed (power on sound twice) you may let go of the keys.

It was explained to me by the tech that this process cleans out the drive memory and what not.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

That's called a PRAM zap and I've tried it before.

    But thanks for the suggestion.

hey I haven't read through all 55 pages of this post but I've been trying everything and I just thought I would add the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N drive to the list if it wasn't already on it. Hopefully a solution will be found

    Hi there,

There is a solution. I had read it on this series of posts a while back. It's insane that there are now 822 posts on this same subject.

I took a credit card and wrapped a micro fibre cloth around it. I inserted it in the dvd slot and moved it around. I guess it cleaned whatever needed cleaning as my player is now working.

    Hope that works for you.

No - that's no solution! A solution would solve the problem for the hundreds of us on this thread who've experienced crappy performance from the SuckyDrive.

There have been many "solutions" listed here, from your wrapped credit card, to cleaning disks, to compressed air, to resetting the PRAM and on and on. (Tried em all and none worked!)So far, nothing has been found to be a universal fix except replacing the drive - and even then many of us here have done that only to have yet a second drive fail.

I recently put my 3rd drive in my MBP. Yes, there are varied steps one can and should try and hopefully one or more might work in an individual situation - but to date, there has been no 'solution.'
