Q: Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1295681

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

    Hi R,

The they after my post I found an Untitled DVD locked inside my Trash, I did put it back to Desktop but still haven't got any reading on my Superdrive, it does not spin, so the reading is not done and any inserted disk is ejected right away.

I do not think "Apple meant" to have my Superdrive blocked, but I can not exclude from concern those broken functions on those help page links that were suppose to open System Preferences panels as also I can not exclude the cleaner disk I have used with no success on the same session.

But I will try the compressed air trick.

    Cheers, K.

    K...

If that doesn't work...followed by a disc clean...Plan B is you are near an Apple Store...schedule a mtg w a "Genius" bar tech person...and let them try a fix...Ya never know. I just returned today from a defective Time Machine that was "fixed once" (power supply prob) and went on blink few months later...they replaced it... no hassle...If you can't do that...or get nowhere upon doing so...then you got yourself a broken superdrive...and either replace internally or externally w another, find workaround (connected w another Mac to read disc); or try "Plan C"...don't know what that would be for you...but one can only try one's best. Suerte.

    Dear Didier:

Maybe this is a lot of time since your post.

But since I have some troubles with my MBP 1,1 and its nasty UJ-857 superdrive, I find your comments. And may give you an answer.

In my opinion, when a drive begins to auto eject disks, is for an hardware failure.

For other sight I may say, since the iPhone and the iPad develop, Apple delivers Updates without its historic product quality. It is like Macs are not the best choice to a refined design and quality because all the effort is for that other devices.

In conclusion. A lot of bud behavior appear since Superdrive Update 2.1.

In my case, since that update my superdrive DO NOT BURN DVDs.

I reinstall the RPC-1 firmware, and nothing happens. All media is readable. And when want to burn, left a message: The media is not supported, choose another disk from another brand.

Please, Any may tell us what brand is the recommendable for an Apple Drive????

Another to this very long list. My MBP would play anything when my two other iMacs were refusing to load. I did a software update and all of a sudden it is refusing to load some DVD films. Other films play perfectly and the frequently used cleaning disc loads every time. Could this be something like a digital rights management glitch? I have read quite a bit of this thread but must admit not all.
If someone has a repair strategy, could they please repost for those coming to the thread for the first time. In the mean time, I will go back to reading through the thread.
    Thanks. Love and Light.

I was having an issue with my superdrive ejecting any blank DVD media I put into it (I tried 4 different brands). It did play any burned discs I had (including the same brands of discs that wouldn't work when blank). After trying all the fixes I could find online, I took the computer into a local Apple store. The computer is almost 3 years old, but I still have a couple of months of Applecare left.

When I showed up for my appointment, I was asked what the problem was and they ran their diagnostics on the computer. Everything checked out fine with the superdrive. Without even trying to replicate the problem, the genius asked me to wait a minute while he checked stock on a new optical drive. He emerged from the back after a couple of minutes to tell me that they didn't have one. He said they would order one and call me when it was in. This was on Friday afternoon and by Sunday evening they had the replacement in stock. I brought the computer back to Apple on Monday night and had it back within 2 days. I have tried burning about 4 different types of disc and all have worked perfectly. The drive is quieter as well.

I am on this for thread for the EXACT same problem... Tried four store-bought DVD's last night and a couple software CD's- it read ONE... All of these Discs work perfectly on my wife's Macbook.
Been searching for help all day and I'm realizing there is none (Why would I replace a DVD Drive when it should be Blu-Ray anyway??).
Just wanna add my voice to the chorus now that I see this is a design flaw worthy of a recall by Apple...
We are talking about PREMIUM computers, and it's obvious now that these Mashita(?) drives are defective. I EXPECT BETTER QUALITY AND RESOLUTIONS FROM APPLE... This is a mass issue obviously, so please EVERYONE with "MacBook Pro Super-Drive Malfunctions" should comment... Once that starts popping up on Googles top hits, we'll probably get a response(SMH)

As far as I am concerned, Apple is evil. They know the answer to this problem, and they deliberately refuse to post it on their Support site. Apparently, they also instruct their tech support reps not to tell customers the solution.

    http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=2108207627404661388&postID=2347010421900 248473&page=1&token=1302556981751

If you have any trouble getting to the link above, know that the simple solution is to clean the DVD drive lens. One way to do it is to use an eyeglass cleaning cloth and a business card, concentrating supposedly on the left side of the drive. (I did the whole drive.)

Apple will be happy to replace the drive for you at an exorbitant price. But they won't tell you about this little dust problem. Note that you will have to use this solution periodically. (I will try to clean the DVD drive lens quarterly.)

    Jerry:
Glad the cleaning method worked for you but please don't presume that it is the universal answer to this Super Drive issue. IT IS NOT! There are many of us on this thread for whom that was not the solution - more I daresay than those for whom the cleaning did work. In my case, I tried every cleaning method possible, canned air, cleaning disk, cloth and card, and on and on. In my case, the only solution was to replace the drive - I did it myself (really easy) rather than pay Apple.

Again, glad the cleaning worked for you but it is not a universal solution. That method has been posted here many times before by the way, though not by APPLE.

I have not read all 58 pages of posts but thought I would add something that just worked for me. Having already tried the cleaner method to no avail I opened Disk Utility and inserted a DVD when the disk icon first appeared there I told it to check the disk. Remarkably the disk stayed in the drive and the DVD became playable.

I just found this thread and only glanced over the last 4 pages or so. I have a MBP from June 2009 and it does not recognize CDs. It just spins and whirrs, then ejects them again. Now, in some cases, e.g. after a reboot some CDs are recognized once. Ejecting them, reinserting, not recognized anymore. Driving me nuts for months. I tried blowing and the credit card trick, both did not help.

    I have the MATSHITA DVD-R  UJ-868 with Firmware-Version:          KB19.

However, I always had the impression, the problem started with the update to 10.6.4 or so. So I tried th efollowing experiment last weekend, after making an image clone backup of by system disk:

    1. Wiped system disk, then fresh install of 10.5.7 from DVD, which is what I got with my MPB originally. No other software, no updates. Tested many CDs and DVDs, all worked nicely, absolutely no issues at all.

    2. Wiped system disk again, then fresh install of 10.6 from DVD. All tests with many CDs and DVDs passed, again no issues at all.

    3. Updated via Softwareupdate to the latest, i.e. 10.6.7 and reran the tests. Not recognizing CDs anymore, except only a few times after a reboot, and then only once.

If I recall correctly I started having the problems after the update to 10.6.4, then it was good again with 10.6.5, and back to problems since 10.6.6. I may be wrong with the exact versions, but I did get better and then worse again.

Anyone know if I can update to 10.6.3 and then 10.6.5 after installing 10.6 from DVD?

To me this looks like a software problem in the OS. If it had to do with the lens, the behaviour would be different, I would imagine. Is there some read sensitivity setting that has changed? Has anyone noticed a similar behaviour?

I guess my next step is a visit to the store and have the drive replaced ...

So I've been reading over the past few pages and tried a lot of suggestions, with only failure as my reward. Here is what my problem is.

I have a MacBook Pro from around mid 2009 (was replaced by Apple from a mid 2008 model and worked on several times after that). My specs: MacBook Pro 15 Inch. 320GB HDD, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB RAM. SuperDrive Matshita DVD-R UJ-868

My SuperDrive (or as it's been refferd to as "SuckyDrive"), no longer reads DVD's, but their is a catch. I can play CD (Audio and other files) content. Use software install DVD's (even Windows 7 and Ubuntu), and I can play some DVD's that I burnt on this Mac. Any other DVD (EX: James Cameron's Avatar), fails. It insert it, listen to the drive click, spin up with increasing velocity twice. Only to have it stop and eject this disk. I've tried multiple NTSC formmated DVD's, in fact I've tried ever DVD in my house (which only ammounts to about 15). My Dell XPS and AlienWare M15x can handel these DVD's just fine, so can my DVD Player.

This problem developed (or at least I noticed it) about five or six months ago. Prior to which I had not used the drive at all. I am running 10.6.7. The drive stopped working while running 10.6.4 (not sure now). Alas, the Apple store is not an option for me, as my Mac is not under warrenty.

And if this is all just an issue with the OS, then Apple needs to get off its arse and fix it. They've had far too many updates to not have fixed this by now.

Well, I went to the local Apple Store yesterday and had the drive replaced within less than 90 minutes. I have AppleCare so it's covered.

Now everything works again as designed! ;-)

I think it is a combination of software and hardware. If the hardware doesn't meet some specs that seem to have changed with 10.6.4, 10.6. and 10.6.7 it fails. A new drive seems to meet them and works nicely again ...
