Playing Video on The iPod Photo

Dear Apple,
Just wondering how long and when software can be available for the iPod Photo, to allow it to play videos. Granted the screen is smaller than the new video iPod, but it should only be a software issue as far as allowing it to play videos. Also a family member of mine just got the new video iPod, and there really should be more formats available as far as video playback. I have still yet been able to reformat my family videos to get it on the video iPod. Hopefully someone has some answers. If not I really think apple should consider it, they could sell alot more movies. I appreciate your time and look foward to your reply.

Also, the likelihood of offering a software update EVEN IF POSSIBLE, is not promising. That wouldn't make sense financialy for the company as they would loose sales from the newer product.

I have read this so many times and I disagree completely. I've bought an ipod photo not long ago, there is no way I will be upgrading in the near future, so apple will get no more money from me being an ipod photo user. However, if a software update was available, I would reguarly buy videos from itunes. So now Apple are losing money from me. The ipod photo is relatively new, so I'd be surprised if the majority of photo users will be dropping it to upgrade. It won't happen, they will stick with it

Hello Gregory, welcome to discussions.

but it should only be a software issue as far as allowing it to play videos

This is not the case at all. The new iPod with video incorporates new video hardware from Broadcom onto the logic board. This is the heart & soul of video decoding on the new iPod. A simple software update would not be enough to enable video on the iPod photo.

Ars Technica has a fully detailed review of the new iPod with video, where you can see the internals for yourself.

Riiiiiight...
Then why can Linux (Podzilla) do it? Heck, it can do it even on the old black and white iPods. Now, I don't know much about coding, but if a bunch of guys in their spare time can make an iPod play video, why can't Apple? And that whole 'void your warranty' is just stupid. Let's punish people just because they found a better OS.
I like my photo, and don't really care enough to buy a new iPod just to play videos. I just think it would be neat to be able to do it on the one I have now.
Also, the website is www.arstechnica.com, not www.arctechnica.com, as you have it labeled.
(Please note: I really like Apple. This just smells fishy to me. My post might come off as angry, but that is only because I thought RE4 for the PS2 came out today, but it is actually tomorrow ^_^ )

Do what? Play DRM content that's been downloaded form iTMS? It can't.
Podzilla is crap. It's a hack of a hack, and it's not even worth using. Have you even tried it?

but if a bunch of guys in there spare time can make an iPod play video, why can't Apple?
Apple did. It's called the 5th Generation iPod.

Correct. My apologies for the typo. I'll edit my post accordingly.

Dear Gregory,
I totally agree with you, I don't think that it is a hardware problem as much as it's the problem of creating an upgrading software!! I really don't see the problem, I mean that won't affect the sales of the new 5th generation or the 4th one with photos only!!
The upgrade could be for a reasonable price at the certified Apple dealers and so both models would still be sold and neither would be affected!! In fact this would make Apple a winner as George earlier noted.
A lot would really appreciate this step.
