.emlx and .emlxpart files choking MAIL account folder

I recently deleted a ton of messages from mail, as my MAIL folder was taking up 15 gigs of space on my hard drive. After archiving them to an external drive and then deleting them, my Library's MAIL folder is still huge!

This is an IMAP Gmail account. When I right click on the mailbox for this account in the left nav of MAIL and select "GET ACCOUNT INFO" a window opens and displays that Currently used is only 199 MB (2200 Messages). Yet when I look at the folder in Library - MAIL, there are 13+ Gigs. It seems that most of the files in this huge folder are .emlx or .emlxpart files, many of them 4 MBs or more.

In Mail Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors I have selected to Move Deleted Message to Trash Mailbox, then "permanently erase deleted messages when Quitting Mail."

How can I get rid of the .emlx files safely, to free up space and get my MAIL folder to say it's using the same space as the MAIL program says it is.
Thanks!
