G4 733 with GeForce4 MX 32MB - second monitor

G4 733 with GeForce4 MX 32MB

I currently run a LaCie Photon 19 at 1280x1024 and am thinking about getting a second monitor to increase desktop space.

My understanding is that the card will support dual monitors at up to 1920x1200. Is that correct, please?

Thanks,

Michael

In short, no, sorry 😟

BUT you could swap the card. I bought one for my AGP-DVI G4 & it works great! Good seller on ebay too: http://preview.tinyurl.com/nvidia6200mac

FTA:

NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card with TwinView and 64MB of SDRAM for dual display support

Dual display option supports one VGA display and one ADC display simultaneously.

Thanks for interest.

That's for the GeForce4 MX 64MB, mine is GeForce4 MX 32MB and therein lies the uncertainty.

I bought this Quicksilver used some years back and it appears the original owner had specified/installed the GeForce4 MX 32MB card which I believe was available as an option on some G4s later than the 733.

As far as I can make out the card was specially made for Apple but I can find little information about it. I did find one spec which suggested it would support dual monitors as in my OP but it was not wholly clear.

System Profiler shows the current monitor of course and identifies it as main display with mirroring off. It then shows a second entry as:

+Display: Status: No display connected+

Does the existence of a second display slot in System Profiler indicate dual monitor capability or is it always there regardless of card?

I suppose I could always hook another display onto the ADC port and see what happens. Does anything nasty happen if you try booting with two displays on a card that will only support one?

What does the System Profiler report for the VRAM of the card?
I have a Geforce4 MX from a Quicksilver, and as far as I know, the Geforce4 MX in the QS series are all 64MB VRAM.
Does the card have DVI and ADC or VGA and ADC ports?

If the card came from a MDD, then it would be the Geforce4 MX 32MB card.

PC or Mac, the Geforce4 series all support dual displays.

If dual displays were not supported, the System profiler would indicate that.

As you can see from the MDD technical specs page linked above, dual displays are supported.

+"What does the System Profiler report for the VRAM of the card?"+

GeForce4 MX VRAM (Total):32 MB

+"Does the card have DVI and ADC or VGA and ADC ports?"+

Can't get it out easily to check but from what I can see of the distance between screws it's DVI.

+"As you can see from the MDD technical specs page linked above, dual displays are supported."+

Thanks.
