Laptop is on, but screen is black.

This morning I went to close the screen on my MBP while the computer was still on to put it in sleep mode, and as soon as I closed it, I remembered something I had to do and I opened back up quickly, and the screen was black. Absolutely no light whatsoever. All the buttons still work, and I shut down by holding the power button. I even tried removing the battery, but after all that, when the computer turns back on, the screen still won't work. Help please!

Have you tried to adjust the brightness of the screen?
Have you tried fn+F7 ?
Have you tried to reset the SMC?

I have Leopard and to get to windows I turned on my mac while pressing the alt key and chose windows to boot. Thankfully the screen turned on like regular on windows and I was able to go into Internet Explorer and researched my problem. After posting my problem in Apple discussion, I went to apple support page and found Article No. HT1573 "Troubleshooting: My computer displays no video". In short, I had to reset the PRAM by pressing Command-Option-P-R all at the same time while booting. Release the keys when you hear the second "boot sound". This worked like magic. So far so good. One thing though, I can't work in windows without the power cord plugged in but I can stay on battery when I'm in OS. I don't know why. Hope this works for you.

I was wondering if the original author to this forum had a resolution on how she resolve her problem. I have the same exact issue. I was using my MBP last night, i place it to sleep by closing the lid and realize i forgot to check something, i opened it back up i would say 40 seconds or more later and i heard the drive/CD DVD run when you open it. However the screen was completely black. I pressed volume keys to see if was on, and heard the volume sound. Then i tried the bright buttons f2 but nothing. I closed it to wake it up from sleep again and reopened it, yet nothing. I force quit, restart, cmd, opt p+r on start up, i heard it booting up but the screen is completely black. Ive tried nearly everything to get this screen back up and still nothing. Im out of warranty and i don't know what to do. I've read forums after forums and tried every suggestion but still no results. I was wondering if this original aurthor to this forum received any resolution to the same problem i'm having. Please help.

I wondering if the people who have taken it to the Genius if what the problem turned out to be.
My Symptoms are similar.
MBP was running just fine. I got the low battery warning. Closed the lid to get the power cord.
Plugged it in open the lid and black screen. I could here my MBP running. Closed the lid again and let it sit and when I opened it back up, everything seemed normal. Working fine. CLosed the lid again and the next time I went to wake it black screen. Tried resetting everything and still nothing. Hooking it to an external monitor nothing. After it boots it does seem like the sleep light on the latch comes on and stays solid. Even when I close the lid it stays solid. I did try the trick pushing the power button and then hitting "s". This did seem to make the light pulse like normal but still a black screen upon waking. However the next time I boot I am back to the same Non-pulsing sleep light.
One thing that I have noticed that I haven't seen posted is that from another system I tried to connect to MBP threw sharing and it sees it but times out when trying to connect. I can connect view firewire target mode and at least get my hard drive to mount.

I have been reading like I am sure you all have about this issue but I am not seeing a lot of solutions or what ended up happening once the Genius got it.

Okay not sure if this gives any answer to anyone with this issue but I gave up and left my MBP sit for an entire day, yes a full 24 hours without touching it. I was on to setup my appoint with the Genius when I decided what the heck I will hit the power button when poof, started up just as it always has. Has been running all day without an issue. Though I have yet to close the cover but it has gone in and out of sleep without any issues.

I've had the exact same problem. I brought to a repair store and they replaced the logic board. It worked for 30 mins then went again. The light on the front came on though and I could hear the fans starting, but it wouldn't give me the chime. Let the battery drain, took it out for a while. Put it back in, let it charge completely and then it came back on. So I'm afraid to turn it off now. I've installed Fan Control and I'm keeping an eye on it. Backing everything up now. It's only two months old, MBP, 2.4Ghz, 2gb ram. Can't believe it's giving me so many problems already. I always heard good things about Mac's and decided to get it as my work laptop. I hope they fix this problem soon and I don't have the worry of it cutting out when I need it most. I rely on it for work and I'm completely lost when it's not working. When / Where will we hear something about the problem? My graphics card is the Nvidia 9400 and 9600m. The earlier model (8600) has problems and it looks like my one does too.

Well, after some hope it died again for me. I took it to the Apple Store and after three days they came back and said it was my system fold and re-installed it. My question to them was if it was something in my system folder then why couldn't I boot from the Apple Disk or From Tech Tool Pro. Well, I could boot just had the black screen and the steady sleep light and no external monitor. They said well if I have anymore problems to bring it back. My guess is the fact that it sat in an Air Conditioned Store for three days is why it fixed itself. I am restoring everything myself and will see if once it is all restored from Time Capsule if the problem comes back or if once it gets warmer again if there becomes and issue again. Personally I don't think it was my system drive, that doesn't make sense seeing I couldn't boot from anything else.

Mine won't turn on again now. It was on yesterday for a few hours, I installed Fan Control and monitored it. Stayed around the 50celcius range, which should be ok. When I went to turn it on this morning, it wouldn't work. Same again, you hear it on and see the sleep light at the front. So many people seem to have this problem, I don't understand how Apple haven't come up with a proper solution. I don't have the 8600 graphics card that is known to be faulty, I have a newer one, the 9400/9600m. There's plenty of documents online saying there's faults with my one. Reports say they cut open some new MBP's and sawed through the latest Nvidia card to do tests on it. Turned out that it also has similar problems, but why have Apple not put something up about this also. I don't know where to go from here. I use my laptop for work and I'm unable to do anything without it, I'm losing time and money as we speak, and spent a LOT of money on the laptop. It's two months old and has only worked for 5 weeks of that time, which is absolutely ridiculous. Nothing happened to it so obviously it's a manufacturing problem.

What I already stated in my previous post.......... +"90 days of FREE phone tech support."+

The Irish support number is 1850 946 191.

International Support Phone #s

When/if you call the above number, ask to be transferred over to +Customer Relations.+
CR is NOT tech support. This department takes care of Apple's customer concerns and if needed/necessary over-rides the tech support department.

After finally proving to the Genius Bar that it wasn't something in my system folder and being without it for week while the blew away my system folder, only to take it home and have the same issue happen. I brought it back today and said I have done nothing with it but bring it home and reboot it and look same issue I brought in to them in the first place.

They ran some test and said that it wasn't my graphics card but believed it could be the logic board so mine is also on its way to Texas to get my logic board replaced. Why they wouldn't do that or listen to me in the first place I don't know. Had told them I couldn't boot from any other startup disk to cure my Black Screen issue. So of course that means you should blow away the system folder and that is the real issue. Not. So it looks like it will be two weeks for being without my laptop. Hopefully them replacing the logic board is the issue and it isn't also the Graphics card.

With the amount of post about this you think the Genius Bar would be a little more aware of this problem with these laptops.
