print size constrain 4X3

I sent off photos to be printed from the apple site via iPhoto and some came back with bits cut of. this was apparently because they were cropped to 4X3 constraint. I do not want to lose parts of my pictures in this manner. How do I avoid this problem or is it possible to crop a picture to 4X3 without losing any of the subject matter. J.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can't. The standard print sizes are 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10. None of which are the same ratio. Even the older 3.5 x 5 is the wrong ratio. You can print them your self on a larger piece of paper and the trim off the excess. See iPhoto: About aspect ratio and print orders.

You might find a custom lab online that will print them up to the 4:3 ratio. Don't know what size they would be, 6 x 4.5 maybe. Try Googling for it.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

I cropped in Iphoto and sent off photos to have printed (through Iphoto) and they were cropped again. Am I doing it wrong? I assumed cropping 4by6 in Iphoto would get me the exact photo. I don't want them cropping for me. I used to do it all in Photoshop with exact pixel dimensions but would like to speed the process and just do it in Iphoto.
Thanks for your guidance.

Yes, cropping to the 4x6 landscape (or portrait as the case may be) should give you a correctly printed. How much is being cropped off by the processor?

Crop one to 4 x6 in iPhoto, export to the desktop and then check with Photoshop. Make sure it's in the right ratio. Photoshop may say it's at 72 dpi but the size in inches will be very large. But that's all just relative. The key should be the ratio of size to width.

If iPhoto create a file that is substantially different from what a 4x6 created by PS, then you may have to stick with PS. I've not ordered photos thru Apple so can't comment from experience.
