Airport PPPoE time status - How do I turn it off?

I have an Airport wireless network and I was having issues with my DSL modem. They/Earthlink suggested disabling the PPPoE on the modem and turning it on in in my airport.

I did that only now, next to the airport icon in the menu bar is a time counter showing how long I've been connected. I'd really like to turn it off. Does anyone know how to do that?

I realized yesterday that even when the time is not displayed next to the Airport icon, the PPPoE time (non)display uses network bandwidth. (You can confirm by going into Network System Prefs and turning off "Show Airport Status in Menu Bar" completely and if you have e.g. Menumeters, your throughput will drop to complete zero when the comp is otherwise idle.) The time is being pulled directly from the Airport Extreme each second. It's just a couple hundred bits, but every second that's unnecessary and silly.

Any help much appreciated.

I did that, but the network is still sending the updated time every second. If you have MenuMeters (or some other real-time network throughput monitor) you will see traffic every second even with the time not showing. It seems like the only way to completely quash the unnecessary traffic is to remove the Airport indicator from the menu bar.
