EXIF data dropped when editing in Photoshop Elements 6.0 from iPhoto 8.0?

I've seen various posts about EXIF data issues, mostly about geo info. My question is:

Does iPhoto not include the EXIF data when you have it set to edit your photos in Photoshop Elements 6.0? The reason I ask is because I can easily see the EXIF data in iPhoto but when I choose to view the file info in PSE, it's not there - or at least in the detail that it was in iPhoto (i.e. camera make/model, aperture, ISO setting, shutter speed, etc.).

Anyone else notice this? What's going on here? Is this an issue with iPhoto 8.0?

Thanks for any insight and input.

Best regards,

Jason

Hey guys,

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure what exactly happened...maybe there was some corruption, iPhoto was acting up, or something happened during import but half of the files I was working on last night had the info while the other half did not. I shoot in both jpeg and in RAW and it seemed that the RAW half had it but the jpeg half did not. The other strange thing that was happening was when I chose to edit the photo with the exif data (RAW) it would come in as a jpeg - no RAW editor launched. I'm working on some photos today and everything seems to be working fine now - both formats contain the exif data.

BTW - after I edit the photo in PSE I choose to "Save As" and place it in another location. I do this so I don't bog down my iPhoto library and to keep the originals as they were in case I want/need to resort back to the foundational file. I've read about older versions of PSE that would strip the exif data if you simply saved the file rather than save as, but I'm not sure if this is still the case in version 6.0 or not.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.

1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.

If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

I believe is you use PSE this way and then export out of iPhoto as Terence suggested you'll get the metadata.

Alrighty...I've been doing some more comparisons over the last few days and have discovered a pattern.

I notice that even though both formats (JPEG and RAW) contain the EXIF data in iPhoto it somehow, and for some unbeknownst reason, gets stripped when I bring the JPEG version into PSE to edit. The EXIF data remains in the RAW version but not the JPEG one. Also, I check to see if it is there before I make any changes in PSE.

Any insight as to what is happening or why this is happening? I'm guessing that this is something caused by iPhoto since the data is present in iPhoto for both versions?

Thanks,

Jason
