Capture without timecode

Hi.
I'm transfering VHS tapes into Final Cut Pro. Until now I've been putting every single one into a DV tape and then capture it into Final Cut.

Is there a way to skip the DV tape prosess? I tried, but there was an error because there was no timecode.

You need one of these: http://desktop.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/videoconversion.php
or a camera with a pass thru option - hook the VCR to the cam and connect the camera to the computer via FireWire.

In FCP's Log & Capture > Capture Settings menu, change from it from DV NTSC FireWire to Non-Controllable Device.
Start the VCR playing, then click on Capture Now.

Nick is correct.

Be advised, that by dubbing from VHS to DV tape, then capturing the DV tape, provides you with relevent timecode to the source DV tape (should you ever need to recapture).

Using non-controllable device will generate it's own timecode, that will not match to any future recapture.

Choice really depends on your needs and workflow.

OK, I went through this same problem, but I found "non-controllable-device" option is locked and I'm not able to unlock it. Is there any trick to do it?

Why do you want to or think you need to unlock it? You just use it. You'd unlock it if you wantted to make changes to it. But you don't change locked presets, you make a duplicate and rename it and change the copy.

Well, every time I choose this option it still waits for the time code and I'm not able to capture. When I return to capture options "DV-NTSC" is marked as active. So it looks like I can't switch to "non-controllable".

Well, that's not what you asked in your first post. Using a preset is quite different from unlocking it.

But I have never used Final Cut Express. You might try that forum where Tom Wolsky and some other wonks may have an answer for you.
