Windows Vista fan constantly running

I just recently purchased a macbook air ( 1.86, 128gb ssd) and I've been extremely happy with it. I was wondering if people have noticed that the fan is always running when using Vista but not in OS X?

Is there a solution?

My fans don't run enough when using Vista. My system gets so hot after only a few minutes of light use that the system begins to lock up and eventually crashes. It's very frustrating since the major selling point used to get me to buy the machine was that it could run Vista. Is Apple planning on issuing an update or firmware or boot camp update to address this issue?

I had the same problem on my mbp, windows vista was running very hot, but after some research, i found out it was because windows used the mbp's 9600GT graphics card instead of the integrated 9400. So the more powerful GPU yields more heat, one solution is to use a program called smcFanControl, just google it. what you do is set the minimum fan speed in osx, then reboot into windows and the fans will stay at that speed. It's not a good solution though because if you sleep the computer or boot straight into windows, it doesnt really work. And my computer still froze sometimes in windows... So if anyones finds anything better, please let me know 🙂

The chips specs allow a maximum temperature of 105°C. Even after running stress tests for hours with a CPU temperature of around 100°C the computer wont crash. The GPU usually stays well below that anyway.

Besides, the fans are operated by hardware and thus run just the same on Windows as on OS X, at least on my late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro. As far as I can tell they ramp up quite late and slowly after a longer Idle period. But after that they react quicker. This is to make the computer quiet and nothing to worry about.

If your fan is constantly running then try reseting the PRAM first. If your Macbook is constantly freezing then try to fix the graphic-card's performance level to some "low power 3D" state via Rivatuner.

Scroll down the following thread for a guide with pics how to do the latter.
