Q: iDVD 5.0.1 -spits dvd out at "finished recording" right before burning

howdy:

i am going crazy trying to burn a dvd with old home movies that were transferred from vhs. after i dubbed them onto dvds, i ripped them using dvdxdvpro, which broke each 2-hour dvd into 8-minute increments. i then edited them and put them in the correct order using imovie and thought i was home free. but when i use idvd to burn it, the same thing keeps happening: it goes through all of the correct motions (taking hours to encode) and then spits the dvd out at the finished recording screen, right before it has a chance to burn. because the movie was large (3:59), i used a double layer dvd. a friend thought the movie was too large so i tried making a mini version that is 24 minutes, but the exact same thing happened.

also, it seems like my movies are really big: 78.21 gb for the large one and 6.43 for the small one. is there any way to make them smaller?

thanks much

g5, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

    Hi

Size in Gbs of no interest to iDVD only time. This includes times for menu !

To be able to work iDVD needs a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk
This can't be altered to other hard disk. Space has to be there.
This is for 4x3 standard TV-video. For HD most probably about 4 times more is needed.

    else

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*

    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb

    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)

    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try

iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.

    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)

    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try

    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player

iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard

Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

    hello:

    thank you for your response.

i should have enough space on my start-up disk: 112gb. i repaired permissions and checked the hard disk (though nothing needed repairing). i also trashed the idvd and imovie pref files.

as for program mismatches, here are the versions i have installed:

    idvd 5.0.1
    mac ox 10.4.11
    quicktime 7.6

also, would it help if i edited the movies on imovie rather than imovie hd?

you mentioned the last resort: deleting every idvd application and folder and installing idvd 08. but i don't have idvd 08. is there an upgrade for that version?

sorry for the rambling but i am such a neophyte, though i am trying to understand this.

    thanks again,

    Hi

iDVD08 - No there are no upgrade only way is to buy next version

Upgrades just in the no: serie eg 5.0.0 to 5.0.1 etc

I would really try to make a new account, log into this and have a re-try

Using iMovie 5 or iMovie HD 6 should work fine. iMovie08 and 09 doesn't work
as good when aiming at a DVD as result.

    hi again:

i decided to get toast 9 and am happy to report i just successfully burned my 3:59 video onto a regular old single-layer dvd! what's odd is that my movie was 78gb when it was in imovie5 but when i dragged it into toast it shrunk to 3.8gb. you mentioned that imovie 8 and 9 weren't anything special--would you stick with my old 5 version or get one of the newer ones.

anyway, i am very happy it burned successfully and with chapter markers. someone had mentioned that the one bummer using toast was that it would only be able to burn a dvd that ran straight through but that's not the case.

thanks again for all of your suggestions.

    Hi

    iMovie08 and 09

Depends on what Camera and Mac You are using.

4x3 Standard miniDV video to burn to a DVD as result.
I would (and am) useing iMovie HD 6 (but 5 is very OK)

16x9 HD and like I would try iMovie 08

iMovie 09 works on my dG5 Mac-Pro BUT VERY SLOW and near to not usably.

If You want to mix different material eg 4x3 miniDV and 16x9 full Hd and
keep as high quality as possibly You should test FinalCut Express (and Pro)

Toast™ - a great tool and as You seen can put more into a DVD
BUT You'll also notic that when more than 3 hours ans SL-DVD the quality more and more
lowers to a quality of VHS or worse. So there is a cost in quality.

    hello again:

well, after i successfully burned a 3:59 dvd in toast 9, i have since been having problems. each time i try to burn a smaller video (1:40), it stops right before the burn with the message "medium error, sense code 0x11, unrecover read error".

i even went out and bought verbatim disks because i was told they're more compatible with macs, but this keeps happening.

another thing that's odd is that the 3:59 movie that i have is listed as having 78.2gb. but the 1:40 movie, which is a shortened version of the 3:59 one, has the SAME gb. how can that be so? is there a way to compress the size?

thanks again for any light you can shed on this problem.

    Hi

    a. +"medium error, sense code 0x11, unrecover read error".+

    I would use a Cleaning CD/DVD disk.

I only use Verbatim DVD-R and burn at an as slow speed possibly + Minimum of 25Gb free
space on internal boot hard disk (others of no interest)

    b. iMovie/FCE/P are non-destructive movie editors.
If You import one hour DV = about 13-14Gb then drop it into TimeLine.
Now edit away everything except ONE FRAME.
How much do You think the movie project needs - Yes still 13-14Gb - It's non destructive
It never tuch the original download just change the manus for how it's play-backed.

    hello again:

i bought a dvd laser lens cleaner and tried burning again with verbatim dvd+r disks using toast 9 on 2xdvd. i have just over 100gb free space on my internal hd.

this time, i got two different messages: both at the writing lead-out stage:

the first: medium error, 0x73, 0x03

the second: medium error 0x11, unrecovered read error

i am truly at my wit's end in figuring out what is wrong.

    thank you,
