NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT does not work on my early Mac Pro - HELP!

I recently bought a NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT video card to replace the Radeon X1900 XT that came with my early Mac Pro. I installed the card after removing the Radeon and connected my Cinema HD display to the DVI ports of the GeForce. The display remained black. I had to reinstall the Radeon in order to have any video. By the way, the GeForce card was made specifically as an upgrade to the early Mac Pro's. Help!!!

Mac Pro 2x2.66GHz Dual-Core, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 16 GB RAM

Okay, I'm at a loss. The upgraded video card and upgrade of system software to 10.5.6 has not solved the problems with frequent crashes and video re-draws. What next?
