Question

Allow users change IP address without admin permission

Hi,

I want to allow (laptop) users to change the IP address without admin permission. Can this be done?

Do they need to randomly change IP addresses or do you have a set of IP addresses they would need to switch between?
If the latter, you could set up different Locations, each with a different IP address, and they should be able to switch between those locations.

Unfortunately this isn't possible because the users are traveling a lot and visit a lot of (different) locations.

the only way I know how to do that is by modifying /etc/authorization file to allow nonadmin users to unlock system preferences panes. see this post for details

However, be advised that will will let those users unlock not just the networking system preferences but other system preferences as well. see the last post in the link above for a workaround to prevent that.

Thank you! Although by making this change users get more access than I actually want. I'll have a look into it. Apple really should look into this if they want to fit in a corporate environment.

as i said, there is a workaround to stop this using workgroup manager. see the last post in that link.

Yes I've noticed but the thing is that we don't use Workgroup Manager.

it's a part of server admin tools which is a free download from apple website. It can be installed on any leopard machine - it does not have to be a server.

Thanks but as an ACTC I'm known with Workgroup Manager 🙂. We just bind our clients to Active Directory and manage our clients with ARD and Casper Suite.

No. Some locations are making use of DHCP other fixed IP addresses. We don't manage those networks so we don't know which IP address they must use in case they need to fill in a fixed IP address.
