Any option for professional level video card for Scientific visualization for the Mac Pro? Some users require 3D stereo display, Quadro FX4600 /4800/ 5600 on a Workstation. Has Apple given up on scientific computing.
lol - 5800 FX. hold off on buying anything crazy expensive until you see my benchmarks of the Quadro FX 5600 on our Ars Technica review of the Nehalem Mac Pro. I've been using this card for a couple months and while it's marginally better than the gaming cards for giant 3D scenes or Mudbox, it's horrendous compared to how it performs in Windows and Linux (think literally 1/15th the speed of Maya in Windows). Apple has a lot of work to do on the drivers (they write them, not Nvidia) before these things warrant the cost.
Thanks, but isn't it usually the other way? I mean I get my Vista drivers from Nvidia and they are better than OS X.... and Apple doesn't even do Windows - minimal at best -
Have you looked into Driver Sweeper though? I've seen it highly recommended, and I had really excellent 3DMark06 only after using it - double what it was before using.
has anyone tried the fx5600 on the new 09 mac pro I'm interested since i have the FX5600 and want to purchase the unit and want to keep the card really don't want to sell it??
There is one really excellent review on Ars looking at the Mac Pro and going into the lack of graphics options, why, and excellent performance over-all.
If someone from Apple reads this, it would be nice to get some clarification on their stance regarding the Quadro. I spoke with two Mac Pro PR people and neither could get me an answer.
