Airport Extreme not working after firmware update

My airport extreme base station (802.11n, but pre-TimeCapsule era version) kept working perfectly for more than one year – untill I installed the latest firmware this morning. The thing refused to appear in Airport Utility after update. It is possible to reset it, but once I change any settings and let the Airport Extreme reboot to load them, I always get stuck in the same point – solid amber light, not visible in Utility, nothing helps but yet another hard reset.

It must be caused by the firmware update, since it stopped working right after I installed it. Is there any known way to install previous firmware? And if it is, how can I get the earlier sw in the first place? Looking forward to any advices.

I have the new AEBS that came out last week. I don't have the option to roll back the firmware. My router throughput is about 1/3 of what it is if I connect to the cable modem directly. My Macbook Pro gets the same results whether I'm connected wirelessly or via ethernet. I have tried all solutions mentioned in this thread except rolling back my firmware. I think our only hope is to wait for Apple to release new firmware.

I have a similar problem though not exactly the same,
my airport extreme blocks my incoming mail, have checked everything (that I know of) and can receive mail if I use another router or connection. This arose after two things, this crazy firmware update (I have since rolled back to the previous), and the creation of a mobileme account. Judging from other posts it's looking like a firmware problem, basically with the latest firmware I couldn't receive mail at all but could send mail and access the net, after returning to 7.3.2 I could receive my mail for a short time then it would stop (connection to the net was ok) with the only fix being a restart of the AEBS. I'm on 10.5.6 and the AEBS is less than a year old.
Is this the same problem everyone else is having?

wasted 4 hours after firmware upgrade. Using 5Ghz only. running gigabit ethernet extreme and also one (11n) express, the latter reporting a failed upgrade, but then restarting OK and reported the new firmware. Numerous false trails as one macbook could always "see" the new network but nothing else could, apart from a one-time-only connection with each of the other machines that sometimes worked after shut down and restart but eventually no connection made. Many hard resets (about 6) and changing network name and password to start afresh. Also issues with base station not accepting base station password when finally seen. Strangely my iPhone saw the "5G 11N only" network at one point.
back to previous firmware and all is now fine again.

I also got the (-5) error on my Macs and (-4) on the gack PC when trying to read the configuration. I WAS able to hit the Other Button on the PC, enter the IP and Password, and get into the configuration. Out of curiosity, I selected "Configure Other..." from the File Menu on a Mac, and it loaded the configuration (no error) and I was able to back off the latest Firmware "Update."

Good luck to all.

My Airport Extreme also stopped working after the update. I did as you suggested, but still no go. Very strange, my iPhone and all non-Apple WiFi enable equipment work OK, but my MacBook and iMac don't - (Airport doesn't accept their security key). My older gear works in WPA Security mode so I set the Airport to 'Personal WPA/WPA2'. I also tried WPA2, but that didn't help. To make sure I was using the correct password, I re-entered it on the iPhone and a couple non-Apple devices and they worked OK (... and yes, I made sure the shift key was off). I can't remember for sure, but it seems the last time I setup the Airport (a year or more ago), one security option was just 'WPA', which is what I used. Any ideas?

No, that didn't help. I don't think it is a reception problem in that the Mac's don't have any trouble finding the AP, regardless of the channel. I think my problem has something to do with the way the security key is handled since the updates. I guess I could shut off security altogether, but that's dangerous. I could scale back to a WEP key, but that isn't very secure and would involve reprogramming all of my WiFi devices, including those that are working OK with WPA. Probably something obvious, but I just don't see it. I could replace the Airport with some other make AP, but it works so well, at least it used to, that I hate to give up on it. One thing for sure, the next time there is a software / firmware update, I think I'll pass. This is costing me a lot of time.

Just spent a couple of hours on this - grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Anyways, i was able to finally getting this to SOMEWHAT work by changing my "closed" network on my AEBS to an open one. The new firmware can't find a closed network.

But it wasn't a suitable solution. The new firmware had slowed down my AE N. I have a slingbox hooked up to my AE N. With the new firmware it struggled to stream @ 2kbps. After rolling back to 7.3.2 i'm able to get back to 4-5kbps.

This new firmware is definitely NOT ready for prime time!
