Capsule 5 GHz lost after upgrade to 7.4.1

Hi all,

I just upgraded my (old) Time Capsule to firmware 7.4.1 this morning. After upgrading
it seemed that my wireless network was not working anymore ( I had my capsule creating
a 802.11n only (5GHz) network). I could not see the network from the macs that previously
worked, nor could I connect to that network.

Resetting . rebooting both the capsule and the macs did not resolve. also reconfiguring the
capule brought no relief. All other functions of the capsule are OK.

When I switch back to 2.4 GHz (802.11n only (2.4GHz)) I saw the network again, and could
use it. So: only 5GHz does not seem to work properly after firmware upgrade ...

Any ideas from the community how to fix this ?
Is there a way to revert to the old firmware, as I need 5 GHz, as 2.4 is overcrowded here.

I've a mixed network: early 2008 MBP, AirportExtreme, G5 PowerMac with an AirportExtreme card.

prior to the 7.4.1 update everything connected to my TC using 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) mode.

after update everything connects but the MBP. It will only connect when the TC is set to 802.11n only (5 GHz). Nothing else can connect at that setting.

Not good.

A clear case of spontaneous network regeneration...

It fixed itself. Walked away from the MBP in disgust. Set the TC to b/g compatible (the G5 is still my workhorse, I need it connected). Figured I could use ethernet until Apple came out with fix for the MBP and... it had connected to the TC. Guess waving that cable at it worked.

No clue. Really.

I'm having some issues with my TC extending my wireless 5GHz network from my AE as well. Just for curiosities sake, do you by chance have the network that your TC is connecting to setup as a CLOSED network? I had mine setup this way and after the 7.4.1 update, the TC could no longer recognize the CLOSED network. However, once I removed the CLOSED network setting on the AE, the TC was able to work with the network just fine.

There is 100% an issue with the new firmware for the Airports. After applying 7.4.1 to my working Express N, it no longer connects to my Time Capsule, with is running 5Ghz N, closed mode. It connects fine to my 2.4ghz other router with the same WPA2 protection. I have TWO Airport Express Ns, and neither now connects to my Time Capsule since the update.

Hopefully Apple fixes this ASAP!

Hi again,

I have a TC working as the main wireless network provider (5 GHz, 11n Only, hidden SSID) with a AEBS extending its range. After reading your posts I decided to go thru with the update anyway, just to see if it worked out for me..and it did!

I don't know if this matter in your case, but this is what I did to get it work:

1. Repaired permissions.
2. Removed the hidden SSID from my wireless network.
3. Updated the TC with new firmware.
4. Updated the AEBS with new firmware.
5. Booted into Bootcamp to see if the wirless network still connected to Inernet, it was!
6. Booted back into Mac OS and turned back on the hidden SSID.

That's it.

I wonder if the difference is that in your network the TC is serving as the primary network host rather than the network extender. Because in mine, the AE is the primary network host, and the TC is the network extender. Unfortunately they can't be switched as I need a wired connection from my Mac Mini to the TC to be able to consistently stream 1080p content from the TC to my Mini (its serving as a Media Center pc for me) and the AE with the internet connection is in another room.
