where do you find the "order number"?

My friend has a 12" ibook. There are 2 different kinds with his proc. speed. Where on the iBook do u find the "order number" such as "M9426LL/A"? I can find the model number but not the order number anywhere, even in the Sys profiler.
We're using Mactracker to get details on the iBook but it doesnt list Model Numbers, only the "MxxxcLL/A" order number.
Can someone shed light on this?

The only place I've ever seen these numbers is when ordering them on the website or on the box. I still have my original iBook G4 1.42 box, and the order number is there on the label.

Like PowerBook6,7? Or something like A3387 that you see on the bottom of the case? The machine number (PowerBook6,7 on my iBook G4 1.42) describes a series of machines (that could be different) but with similar characteristics for system bus, memory, etc. I believe it indicates compatibility with a set of install discs and possibly firmware.

MacTracker lists the Order Number and identifies the computer by processor speed. so for my Pismo it lists: M7630LL/A (400 MHz), M7633LL/A (500 MHz). Mine was originally 400 MHz so the order number is M7630LL/A. For the iBook G4 late 2004 it lists as follows: M9623LL/A (12.1-inch), M9627LL/A (14.1-inch Combo), M9628LL/A (14.1-inch SuperDrive). I don't know what these numbers are good for, but there you are.

Looking at my original iBook G4 invoice, the MxxxxLL/A seems to be the original Apple part number for the iBook, and I don't know if it's actually listed anywhere on the iBook itself--I couldn't find it. But if you go to >About this Mac>More Info>Hardware Overview, the second item will be something like "Machine model, PowerBook6,3". This is the machine ID, and you just need to find the same machine ID in Mactracker.

Good luck!

I think you mean the serial number. Click the Apple logo then click: About This Mac. Underneath Mac OS X you'll see the version number you are running. Click that twice and it should tell your the serial number.

You can also find it in the System Profiler. In that same window, click the More Info button. That will launch the System Profiler. Select Hardware under Contents. The information is displayed on the right. The serial number should be at the bottom of that list.

Model Identifier is in that list also...

Crucial.com sometimes (but not always) identifies different models in their "Memory Configurator". It's usually when there might be confusion over different models with similar processor speeds. They don't use them to describe choices for the iBook line though. The following identifies my latest Mac (MB062LL/B).
