Docks/Cradles for iPone 3G

I'm looking for a dock/cradle that charges the iPhone 3G and also has an audio output port I can plug my headphones into. I want to use this at work on my desk. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks much. Scott

Hello johnsos2,

Not many products out there for the "iPone 3G" but here's the solution for the iPhone 3G (just teasing).

The Apple Universal Dock combined with an iPhone 3G Dock Adapter will do just what you're looking for. The adapters are sold separately at this time and it doesn't appear that a 3G adapter is included with the Universal Dock:

There may be other 3rd party solutions, but without any personal experience using them, this solution is what I have to offer.

he's looking for a headphones out, not a line out.

i'm not sure why you want a headphones out jack on the dock, when the 3G phones jack is available when docked (it's on the top of the phone). the Apple 3G dock is really good build quality, although it's pretty cheap of them to charge $30 for a dock and not even include a USB cable. that argument aside it is a nice dock and extremely compact.

Thanks for all the good info eveyone. The main reason I want audio out/line out on the dock is for a quick connect and disconnect, eliminates one other connection everytime.

This leads me to another question (if I may): When leaving the iPhone plugged into the charging dock for 8 hours 5 days a week, what kind of problems will that cause the battery? Shorten life? I'm assuming people do this all the time with their clock radio iPhone docks. Again and help would be appreciated.

well the Apple 3G dock has a line out, line outs are ideal for sending the audio signal to another device... say a stereo or computer speakers. if you try to plug headphones into that though, you'll find the signal will be very low almost inaudible... that's why i say you'll want to just plug your headphones into the iPhones headphone jack at that point. again unless $30 is more than you wanted to spend, the offical Apple 3G dock is really good build quality and very compact, not worth $30 but nice none the less.

newer batteries function better than the old ones you're thinking of. if you're planning on leaving it on a dock for 8+ hours, you should consider letting it discharge all way to powering off, maybe once a month. other than that 8 hours on a dock shouldn't do much if anything to shorten the life of the battery.
