Question

ATI Radeon 9600 / OS 10.5.6 / Dual 2 GHz G5

Ever since I installed Leopard on my G5, the video display is so slow... almost "stutters" when scrolling. Any remedy or should I upgrade the card?

It shouldn't be THAT bad.

Perhaps you have the original 64 Meg version of the 9600 and a large display?

If so, a 9800 or 6800 may be needed.

It isn't horrible; I can work on it... but the "stutter" when using any scroll bar is specifically irritating. I work in Graphics, so I would prefer a better on-screen display, just as good as it was before the Leopard upgrade.

I am using a 23" Apple Cinema Display.

Hi-

Leopard works the graphics card harder from the Core Image side. The GPU has to work a bit harder than it wants too.
More VRAM wouldn't hurt, especially with the same 9600 processor.
With the 23" ACD and Leopard, you would benefit from moving to a stronger graphics card.

Hi, japamac, what kind of graphics card would you recommend? I'm in a similar situation that I am looking for an upgrade to my ATI Radeon 9600 XT card so I can fully exploit the new Photoshop CS4 features. It should be an AGP card I guess. And I have seen that there's not alot of those available anymore, at least not for Macs.

I am looking for an upgrade to my ATI Radeon 9600 XT card so I can fully exploit the new Photoshop CS4 features.

There are no cards that will "fully exploit the new Photoshop CS4 features" in a PPC Mac.

The best that you can do is get a flashed or Mac edition Geforce 6800 Ultra, or a flashed Geforce 7800 GS.
These cards will support as much as is possible in an AGP PPC Mac.
