Safari keeps asking me for a "login" keychain

I keep getting a pop up from Safari that says something about needing a "login" keychain, then it wants me to enter a password. What is this and how do I know what my password is? Or how do I stop getting this pop up?

Hi Cindy, Do you have a password that you use to login? If not, then hitting the "Return" or clicking on the"OK" should do it. You may get a dropdown that asks if you want to save your password. If you don't want others using Safari then NO, but if you don't want to see the password request again say yes.

If you still get the request after entering your password and saving it in the keychain, you might need to do a first-aid on your keychain. Open your Applications>Utility>Keychain Access.app
Then from the menu bar, click on "Keychain Access" then "Keychain First Aid" in the dropdown menu.

Now click on the "Repair" button in the upper right and then start. For some reason, I do not have to enter a password to run this repair.

Cheers,
Glynn

Hi Cindy

Welcome to Apple Discussions

To stop the prompts, open Keychain Access.app in your Utilities folder. Highlight one of familiar keychain entries on the right side or type a familiar name in the spotlight panel. Then double click the entry. When the panel opens, select "Access Control".

In the "Always allow access" panel, click on the +, then navigate in the panel to Safari in your Applications folder. Save changes.

As Glynn suggested, go to the Keychains Menu>Keychain First-Aid and select "repair". If any errors appear, rerun until you get a clean pass.

Close Keychain Access and restart Safari.

Hi Richard

A bit off topic, however, I'm looking the other way today. 😉

If you don't know the keychain password, then your basic option is to create a new keychain file. By default its password will be the same as the administrator password for the computer.

To do so: Via the Finder navigate to Your User Account>Library>Keychains folder. There, move the Login.keychain file to the trash.

Next, open Keychain Access. A new keychain file may be created for you on the startup. If you see a login.keychain file in the left column, you're good to go. If not, go to the File Menu>New Keychain.

HI Cindy and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Safari/Keychain fix:
Sounds like your Keychain preference files are corrupted. Locate this file:

com.apple.keychainaccess.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from your Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.

If that doesn't help...

1) Quit Safari
2) Open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities) Find the "Safari AutoFill" item. Delete it.
3) Relaunch Safari. Next time it asks for authorization, click "Always Allow".
